Hi
Hi, this is my first post to this great Rolex site. I have been reading lots, just never really had anything to say. The Forum is excellent, lot's of very good info. I just noticed today that it looks like the acrylic crystal on my old but in perfect shape) vintage (1978) TT Datejust has a crack about half way around from the 12 down past the 6, just above the bezel. I have no idea how this may have happened. It could be a scratch, but it looks more like a crack, something like you would get in the windshield of a car, where it "runs" along, once it gets started. I certainly would have thought it to be stronger than that. I am sad that this is my first post. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, gha |

Welcome
If you have an acrylic Date-Just from 1978 that is great. Acrylic crystals tend to crack rather than shatter when subject to an impact. I'd be careful, as the crack might have compromised the water resistance qualities of your watch. I would take it to a local jeweller who has Rolex knowledge and get the crystal replaced. I don't know how long ago you had your watch serviced, but if it was over 5 years ago, you might consider having a full service. My guess is that you have either a 1601 or 1603 model. Any photos would be most welcome |

Thank's to all - more excellent advice. Lol-x, you are right, it's a 16013. Great shape, except of course for the cracked crystal. Took it in this AM to a Rolex service centre, and they are giving it a complete servicing, new crystal, etc. ($300 sound about right?) They told me that if you hit the crystal on something (door knob, etc.) just right, it will crack just like it did, and grow bigger until the whole face of the crystal just pops right off. They have had some come in where the crystal has popped off, and the hands are all #**# up, as the wearer did not notice, and was walking around without a crystal at all. So, I am certainly glad that I noticed it when I did. They also showed me the inside with the back off, and there is some "corrosion" from salt water/sweat on the inside lip, where the o-ring seats. They are going to polish/grind/clean that up so that it stops any future corrosion, and allows the o-ring to seat better. Anyone had this same situation? So again, thank's very much. In 2 weeks, when I get it back, I will post some pics of my "newly renovated" vintage old datejust TT.
