To GV or not GV
First post. Been lurking here for two years and obsessing over the GV. 13 years ago my first and only Rolex (Pepsi GMT) was stolen and as penance I have gone without one since. Now I'm ready to buy and somehow have talked my wife into it - but I have a couple questions and wondered if any GV owners would give me their views. Before my questions, I'll say that I want the GV b/c somehow it seems not to scream Rolex like my GMT did. I need to be able to wear it with a suit as often as with a golf shirt. Questions:
1) the green and orange coloring seems somehow classic instead of quirky to me. Since I'm only going to own one Rolex, as much as I love the GV, will I get sick of the green crystal? 2) how "flashy" is the green crystal to others? I don't really want to attract too much attention but I also don't mind having a unique watch. 3). If not the GV, what's the best alternative? I sort of like the Explorer 1 but it seems a little too plain. I kind of figure the clear crystal/black face Milgauss isn't a good option, but has anyone made the switch and been happy about it? Thanks for any opinions. |

I have a GV, it's totally discreet, no one will recognise it as a Rolex. Yes the bracelet is shiny with the PCL's, but again, it looks nothing like the Rolex that 99% of the general population seem to think a Rolex looks like. The green crystal is also discreet. What you see in photos is normally that the photographer has placed the watch on a certain angle and in a particular lighting situation to emphasise the green tinge. In reality, it's very discreet. You would only notice it if you were actually looking for it. You'll find the 99% of the population have no interest in our watches!

The GV is perfect for almost any occasion. It's a conversation piece for sure and a magnet for fellow Rollies who recognize good taste when they see one.

I love the GV. The different colours of lume are a bonus, my only criticism is the very slightly hazy nature of the green crystal. It's only really noticeable if you compare it with another watch and it wouldn't stop me getting it, but the white dial comes a close second

The green on the GV crystal isn't too strong. Only if you look closely. The only reason I went with a non GV is that the multiple colors of the hour markers bothered me. Otherwise I would have gone for the green crystal! The Milgauss is very under the radar though with the exception of the PCL.

Go with GV, stunner for sure. I think the polished case and bracelet will attract more attention than the green crystal. But only people in the know will ID the watch as a Rolex.

The GV is a great, non-typical Rolex, ie. it doesn't have a rotatable bezel, nor a date or a Cyclops, nor a diving-type bracelet with a Fliplock.
In my view, it is understated because it's not readily identifiable as a Rolex. |

Definately go with the GV.
You already sound set on it.
Can be worn in any situation and the green gives it a special feel. |

Welcome to TRF.
The GV is a very niece looking watch with that little extra something special. If it works for you, I say go for it.

It's not the watch for me because I need a date but having tried one on at an AD recently, it's a thing of great beauty. I also think that the green crystal is a great talking point and looks wonderful! Go for it!!!

It is one of the most comfortable models made.
I had one and traded it, now I miss it. I just tend to need a date on a watch most of the time and when I do not need a date I find myself wearing my matte 5513 so I just don't think Id wear it often enough to get another.

You will not get fed-up with the green glass!
It's not flashy and I find it quite discreet for a Rolex. In my opinion the best model around. Feels good on the wrist too!! Definatley buy the GV you WILL NOT regret it!! |

The GV is so elegant. A beauty for sure. Wasn't durable enough for my daily needs so I flipped it for a DSSD, but it was a magnificent piece.

Very unique watch. It is understated, except for the pcls. Very comfortable to wear and seems to go with whatever you are wearing. If it was my only Rolex I might have to think about it. I'd choose a Sub Date or a Sea Dweller probably.I do enjoy wearing mine a lot though.

I love the GV. Definitely one of the most unique Rolexes. I like the fact that you don’t see many of them either. I can honestly say that I have never seen one in the wild. Yet I see a ton of Subs, GMT's, Explorers, and even Daytona’s. It will be added to my collection one day….
