What more can you tell me about my mother's 30-year-old Rolex?
Hello,
My mother has had this Rolex Datejust for the past 30 years. My father bought it for her as a wedding present. What can you tell me about it? As I'm not quite the "expert". All I know is that it is a Rolex 18k yellow gold lady Datejust with a very stretched bracelet (maybe that's how it's supposed to be?). I wanted to get the serial number from in between the lugs, but my mother insisted on me taking it to the AD so they can 'professionally' remove the bracelet (didn't feel like going). Oh, and my mother believes that the diamonds are aftermarket. Thanks in advance. Pix: Sorry for the bad pictures .. they were taken using my iPhone. Seems to me that you and your mother have identified and diagnosed it failrly accurately. In the US, its commonly referred to as a Lady President (as opposed to the gents' President which has a Day and Date i.e a 'Day-Date'). The smaller version for ladies does not have sufficient internal space to include the day function - but it has the President-style bracelet. And, your mother's President bracelet has stretch - for 18K gold, thats not surprising after 30 years. The gems are, without doubt, aftermarket. If it hasn't had one in a few years, it could probably benefit from a good servicing. Perhaps other members can add to what little I know.

very nice watch! all the diamonds are definitely aftermarket and I believe the bracelet is as well. The authentic bracelet in that condition is not worth much more than the gold so the fact that it is aftermarket does not really hurt the value too much. Don't take it to an authorized dealer, any decent watchmaker will take off the bracelet for you to view the serial number for free, at least they should. Were you considering selling it, or just trying to figure out exactly what you have?

Thanks everyone for the very helpful responses :D !
Is there anything I can do about the stretching? And to "Swisswatchconnection", I'm just trying to figure out its value in the market. Any idea? |
