HOT New model: Rolex Tide
Inside word is that Rolex is doing R&D on a new model that will identify tides.
Tides are extremely important for yachtsmen & fishermen. This the logical extension of the sports range.

Interesting.....
This is a complication that has been done by a few manufacturers over the years, but never by Rolex!! Any hints on the source?

While an interesting complication, most people watching tides need more information that that watch will provide like....exact time of low/high/slack tide and how low and high each day. All easily obtained with a click of the computer mouse.
The YachtMaster II, while a bit of a hit with WIS's into the look and the unusual complication, is a total flop with the racing community it was designed to appeal to. I suspect if the tidemaster is forthcoming it will suffer a similar fate.

If not called the Tide Master, it will be the new Tide Dweller

sort of like how submariners are no longer popular, because people use dive computers? or GMTs are out of fashion, because of computers? or watches are on the way out, because of smart phones? assuming the "tidemaster" or "tideking" is true, it could be a fun complication, and those that spend time on the water boating or whatever may like it for what it is: a mechical timepiece doing something the old-fashioned way. unless rolex butchers the design, of course. |

Could be interesting. A moon phase on a watch for measuring tides would be a no-brainer. Pretty neat with a moon phase tool watch.

Interesting, thanks
Perhaps they will call it the Tide-O-Graph so that there will be a 'TOG' back in the catalogue

There must be some level of doubt about the information received as the 'TideMaster' is already a registered Trade Mark in Australia to a different company:

Yep sounds like a big market, grungy old fisherman in their little aluminium boats floating over an oyster lease with their old jeans and grotty bait ridden jacket with a $80,000 rolex on their wrist. Yep meet these people all the time.
As for Yachties, what if it goes wrong, and they get stuck on a sand bank or under a bridge, can they sue Rolex? Assuming you partly wear a watch for its brand equity if you were a yachtsman what would you want on your wrist a YACHTMASTER OR A TIDEMASTER..... hmm that niche sounds smaller by the minute. I dont work for Rolex, but there are many cool looking watches from Breguet / PP / Blancpain and others that have lots of fun features they might want to try before worrying about the tide, me thinks........

If it comes with a dial that looks anything like the SkyDweller I won`t be interested.

Hopefully this design will look a lot better to me than the Sky Dweller does.

Agreed. The Sky-Dweller was an epic design failure. Hopefully Basel 2013 will have something better to offer

This is a feature I requested in a thread about a future "Submariner II", back in 2010:
http://www.rolexforums.com/showpost....4&postcount=33 My opinion hasn't changed, I still want this watch. |

Agree with this. Some complications/functions are mostly a demonstration of horological prowess. I think it's important, and when done right, it's art.

I think the "logical extension of the sports range" is a general purpse sports watch.
One made for baseball/soccer, golf, tennis etc...players and spectators. It could be called the Rolex "Activa". |

Yes...I'd see that dial on a yellow gold watch.

I had my doubts, and wasn't particularly impressed when I first saw the online pictures, but I reserved my judgment on it. I took a very close look at it last night and tried on the yellow gold version. I was surprised at how much nicer it looked in the metal. Of course, you may not agree, but it's hardly an "epic design failure". |
