Junky Little Rolex (?)
Took a risk and picked up a trashed Explorer I 14270. Got it today and it is really rough. The 14270 is spec'd at 36mm wide, but this one seems to measure out at closer to 35mm. Actually, I think it might be a fake. The local AD wants $150 for authentication. Any opinions here based on these admittedly terrible photos?

I would want to look inside, but I don't see anything wrong based on these photos... One look at the movement will tell the tale, no need to spend 150 bucks...
I think that the Explorer has always been around 35mm, just like the DJ... depends on how you measure it..

$150 to open the case back? Ridiculous. This should be an opportunity to forge a new customer relationship. 2 minutes of his time will tell the tale.
Take the back off, post a photo here and all will be revealed. :-0

My 114270 measure something short of 36mm.
It think the advertised diameter is nominal. Oh, and it looks good to me, too!

Assuming this watch is the real deal, I was thinking of sending it into the RSC for a complete service. Another option is just to keep it "as is" and use it as a beater. I stuck a Seiko bezel protector on it just to see how it would work. I had to clearance it slightly for the crown, and now it fits great. This could be a neat little "Stealth Rolex".

Many may disagree, but every SS Oyster is a beater by virtue of its robust qualities.
You don't need to pamper your Explorer and you certainly don't need to put some gizmo over it to protect/disguise it. What a lot of would like to see is a picture of the innards, if you could do so. If authentic and so far there is no reason to believe that it isn't, what you have there is a little treasure in my humble opinion.

Looks ok to me. Dial has some bubbling but no biggie, it would make a nice daily wearer.

Doesn't look "junky" to me. The only thing that looks junky is that bezel protector.

I've never been able to understand this logic. If a watch needs authentication it has not been purchased at an AD, which of course means no sale for the AD. Why would they provide a free service to someone they can't make any money off? Now if the customer has purchased a number of watches there before it would be a different matter, but I have a feeling that is not normally the case.

No need to spend $150 for authentification if you plan on having it serviced. Send it to the nearest RSC - if it's genuine they'll do it, if not they won't.

Looks real to me. The bezel diameter on the 14270 is exactly 35mm, although the case is advertised as 36mm. (Same middle case as the DJ 162XX). Funnily enough, the bezel diameter on the DJ 162XX is exactly 34,5mm (I have both those models, and have measured them).
You have gotten one of the first non-blacked out dials, and a case with drilled through lug holes. The dial seems to have some bubbling (that might indicate that the watch have had moisture inside). If you can have it opened it will be easy to verify it. It should have caliber 3000. The dial, and the font of the serial and model number looks ok to me. (I am comparing with my 14270, that is just a few years younger). The watch is obviously well used, but the case maintains the original shape (not over polished, if at all). That is good. Give it a service, and enjoy it on a Nato strap - or add a 78360 bracelet with 558 end links for the original set up. Make sure NOT to change the dial/hands, since the early 14270 should have an all tritium set up (IMHO). Best, A |

Looks like the real deal based on just the pics.
Can you please take the toyish rubber bezel thing off?

In fact ask them to crack it open when you turn it in so you can get your peace of mind that day. Nice looking watch.

I figured that bezel protector would get some passionate responses. :)
I was thinking of sending the watch into an RSC for a full service and having the dial replaced. I am a bit surprised at the suggestion that I should keep the original dial, which is obviously quite damaged. Any other views on this? Thanks. |
