Depends, a mid 80s 5500 AK with original bracelet in good condition is around $1500-$1800.
My 1985 just to get your juices flowing. |

I would highly recommend looking at the for sale section of the forum, with a search of Air King. I would do the same on eBay, looking at completed items.
Once you've done that, I would match those up with what your friend is offering for sale. Does the watch your friend is selling come with any paperwork or boxes? Does it have a service history? How does it run? These are a few thing I would want to know I were looking at buying it. I would buy an Air King from the 80's that had a dial I liked (mine has the white dial with roman numerals- my favorite) was authentic (obviously), and was recently serviced for about 2k. With that said, I am not an expert and there are a million variables. Just my opinion. :). Good luck! Edited to add- I think the poster above probably is more in line- 2k might be high.... |

I'm an AK enthusiast and if you're going to do comps, this forum or watchrecon.com would be the best way. eBay is always über high in price.

All AirKings ref 5500 and on should have an oyster bracelet, riveted or otherwise. A very small few were delivered from the factory with jubilees. The customer could specify a jubilee at the time of purchase and this clouds things a bit. Any non steel, 5500 and on, wouldn't be original.

i did check the classified... but i am not familiar with the trading system on this forum... isn't there some sort of feedback system like say ebay or amazon to look at a person's performance? i don't see it...
the only way i could see spending several thousand dollars is a local seller i see on there... otherwise how the heck can anyone be sure you are getting a watch when you send out several thousand dollars?... |

You can do a reference check, see how many other watches they've sold etc. people buy and sell many tens of thousands of dollars worth of watches every day on here. If someone has a high post count, sold lots of watches, and hasn't had any negative issues, you're good to go. If you need help please message me off board via a private message and I can help you vet a watch and seller. I can help put you on the right course.
Regards, Joe |
