Welcome to TRF.
The one you like the most. Now others may tell which to get, I would tell you to get the one you want. If your confused I would wait and do some more research first. No need leaping before your sure.

Have you tried them on? Try them on and see what you like, you'll be the one wearing it! :-)

For that kind of money, you should definitely try them on. Yachtmaster II is more sporty, more casual; DD II is more formal and, I have to say, more of an older person's watch.

For a first Rolex, regardless of budget, I would get a Submariner:)

I have tried both and they feel almost identical. And why submariner first?

Don't get a sub first. I'd say go for the YMII, because it's very rare to see someone wearing one in person. Owning an all yellow gold Rolex is on my bucket list.

Between the two you have listed, I absolutely love the look of the YMII, but I would still go with the DDII. I don't find the countdown timer on the YMII to be particularly useful and I don't like not having the date. Good luck in your decision.

bmaier: I am relatively new on this forum, but from my observations it tends to be very pro-Submariner in its poplulation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and it's a fantastic watch (maybe my next one), but you might want to keep that in mind as you see responses to your post. IMHO, the DD and the Submariner are very different animals.

As others have said it comes down to personal taste. The DD II is definitely more of a classic look and Rolex has been making this watch (in the original 36mm size) for many years.
The YM II is more of a niche product and I don't recall ever seeing one outside of an AD - so if you want something unique it would fit the bill. Personally I would prefer the DD II as I like the look better and it's also nice to have the day and date. To me the YM II dial is a bit cluttered and the regatta timing functionality is useless (or at least, there are superior digital timers that sailboat racers tend to use in real life). If you prefer the YM II however then more power to you. |

DDII. But the gold sub is also a beast. I don't have a sub, but agree it is a great all around watch. And in gold. Wow.

It all depends on your taste, I would strongly recommend you to try both. Having said that, I have a personal preference for the Day-Date II (although the 36mm model remains my favorite).

I would rather have the regular DD than either (true story, as I chose the DD over the DDII twice!), but if I were forced to choose between those two I would get the DDII...

Tough call. I've tried on both and both have a great wrist presence. I'd probably pick the DDII b/c of the others I already have it would round out my collection quite nicely. As for a one and only I'd probably lean towards the YMII.
Good luck!!
