Calling all pilots...

Totally random question here...
I have a friend who flew to Fiji or someother exotic island for his honeymoon and when the plane passed the international date line the crew asked that everyone close the window shades. Why? Is this some trick to fool the body into thinking it is night time or was it just a strange joke?

Thanks!

I believe it's merely common courtesy to close the shades to block the sun which you're chasing the entire way. Crossing the international date line signifies moving from Day 1 to Day 2 of your travel and it's common courtesy to close your shades to let some people try and get some sleep.

I've only crossed it once and I remember this topic came up.

I cross the Pacific as a passenger about 4 to 5 times a year. We always travel accross with the shades closed. I believe it just allows you to get some sleep because you are sitting in those awful seats for 12+ hours...may as well sleep.

Yeah, what bugs me though are those pilots talking through the intercom to wake people up!

Nothing to see that high up and that far over the ocean. It's not like the Detroit-Minneapolis run where you get a nice view of Chicago.

What bugs me more is that bump you feel when you cross the Date Line. It always wakes me up. I wish they would get a road crew out there to fix it.
