GMT II vs. ll
Hi guys!
I'm new to the forum and interested in purchasing my first rolex. I have been enjoying and learning from your posts the last few weeks. (If only AD's were as knowledgeable and helpful ) I am looking at the outgoing GMT II right now. I like the new ceramic model, but it just looks so big on my wrist, and I like the fit of the older model for me. I was thinking the pepsi may become an interesting classic model if they don't make a new ceramic version of it. Anyway, today I found a black and red (coke?) GMT II that had GMT "ll" instead of "II" on the dial. The AD salesperson didn't really know why it was different or what it meant. I read where someone mentioned that there was a variation but didn't find any explanation. Is this a potential collector's item? Does anyone know the details of these models or how many made it out of the factory with the different marking? Thanks in advance! |

Welcome to the forum TheGMT ll is one of the finest watches Rolex has ever made. You can't go wrong with this choice. The ll rather than II seems to have shown up in the later Z model dials and is just one of those anomolies in the various fonts used by Rolex throughout the years. Whether this becomes a desirable and collectable dial in the future is anybodies guess... My personal GMT has the ll. |

Thanks for the info! So I don't guess there is any price premium for one font over the other, correct?

Welcome to TRF!
Honestly, I think the II vs || font is more a potential conversation piece than a potential collector's piece. The old GMT II might be rising in price since it is no more made, but then again, SO many GMT II's were made that it will take a long time before they become real collector's Rolex watches, and that difference between the II's is IMHO not going to make a big price gap.

Buy it!!!
The black and red bezel is so distinctive. A gorgeous watch. Before you buy it, make sure you put both the new GMT and that one on your wrist. The new one has a lot of high tech features that the model you are looking at does not. Either watch will be a treasure and will give you a lifetime of pleasure and service.

Sometimes choice can be a very hard thing... I would find it hard to choose between the Coke and the Pepsi...

Get either one that's available, then go find a friendly AD who will sell you the spare bezel, failing that, get a mate who's in Europe, say Germany or Holland to go to the RSC with your serial number and purchase one for you.
Then you can flip over as and when you wish. |
