Do you close the clasp when you show someone your Rolex?
If I take my watch off to show someone (which is not very often, mainly to show close friends and family), I always close the clasp. I do this for several reasons.
If I leave it open, they usually try to close it backwards, and I'm always afraid it'll get damaged if they try too hard. It also probably subtlely makes them feel like an idiot for not knowing now to use it. It also shows them the watch in its natural form, which is a nicer presentation than having the "guts" hanging out of the clasp. If they want to try it on, they get to see how it works, and then are usually able to close it properly. So what about you guys? Do you do anything special when showing someone your watch? |

I have never shown someone one of my watches before.
I am pretty sure if I did, I would leave the clasp open so they can actually put it on their wrist.

I only show my watch to friends, and only if they ask. I'll leave the clasp open so they can try it on. Maybe we can get some more WIS's.

I usually just ask some strangers on the subway to ask me what time it is...then I just show them my watch...turn my wrist so they see the strap...and show them the face again. I've found that none of them have asked to see my watch after they've gotten over giggling (for some strange reason)...

Yes and no. If it's someone I don't want trying it on or with too much jewelry, I'll hand it over closed as a subtle hint. If I want them to try it, I'll hand it over open like an invitation.

I occasionally take off one of my watches to show someone, especially if they're letting me look at theirs and when I do, I'm pretty certain I leave the clasp open. It's not something I obsess over.

I have never shown my watches either , but in the rare event that someone wants to see it closely, Theres no need to take it off my wrist to show it.

It happened to me very rarely but I usually close it for the same reasons you mentionned (except for the fact that they may fold it the wrong way, I've never of damaging my watch this way). I like them to see the watch in its "natural" form as you said and I usually offer them (them being my friends and relatives, for the ones who are interested to see my watches) to try it on anyways, this way they can open and close the clasp on their wrist and have fun with it.

I recall only two occasions when a friend (I would never hand a stranger/non WIS my watch) has asked to see my watch. both times I left it open, and nether tried to close it or try it on. The first was enamored with the weight, and the second was looking for a dark room to check out the lume.

I would never let anyone handles watches no matter how close they are to me. This includes my wife. I keep them like new as long as possible and avoiding a clumsy friend helps :) only my brother in law knows how to handle a watch but he knows better than to ask me to handle it because he's the same way.

I usually hand mine over to just about anyone who wants to see it, the clasp is open and it's gotta be over a tile, marble or paver stone flooring though

Guys it's just a stupid watch. Some you act like your handing over a newborn baby. It's pretty hard to damage the most well built watch on the planet.

I only hand my watch if the other person ask, i leave it open and stare at it, if the watch is going to be closed in a wrong manner. I'd scream.

Well said! It's just a watch, it's meant to be enjoyed, not babied. Having said that, I've still got a couple of stickers on my RG Daytona, don't want to remove them just yet!

I also close the clasp the odd time I remove a watch for someone else's inspection.

Can't say this has ever occurred to me
I'm usually happy to oblige if someone shows interest. Watches are often made of quite strong materials. Someone did used to ask me several times a week to look at/try on a particular watch. When I decided to sell it, they were delighted to buy it and l let them have it at a good price for an easy sale...
