Are you a "luxury watch" or a "tool watch" person?

Someone I know said they wanted a "luxury dive watch" and asked for recommendations. I didn't really have an answer for him as I am not really into luxury things. I prefer solid, durable things that age well - BMW cars, Ray-Ban shades, Rolex sport watches....I know the tool watch aspect of Rolex has become a bit of a joke, but occasionally we hear from someone who does, like the guy posting from a diving bell with his DSSD a few weeks ago.

Function over fashion for sure. However, you can have a high level of both in a quality time piece.

My Dad always told me to buy the best tool I could not afford. Buy it once and it lasts a lifetime. Buy a cheap tool and you will buy a few of them, not to mention the wear and tear on your knuckles.

I like good tools

Amen brother.

I think Rolex is a Luxury Tool. Let's face it - it is a damned expensive watch to be considered a true tool though.

Sinn, Fortis, etc... - more towards the tool side.

AP more towards luxury.

Are people really answering this honestly? I understand that there are probably a select few who truly use their Subs for deep diving, or their Daytonas for racing, or their GMTs for piloting, but even then... aren't these watches a very expensive for what they are intended on doing? Aka, can't another tool watch be had for fractions of the price?

I'm a luxury watch guy.. the tool aspect is just a cool feature, let's be honest

+1 It's good to know Rolex watches can take a beating, but for a tool watch anything based on a thermo-compensated quartz movement would be far better.

in my line of work, luxury is a tool and my watch tells me the time, another important tool, thus my watch serves two purposes in the tool realm... where I'm going have no clue w this but it's gold with diamonds so luxury? is that the answer? all of the above? yes, I will buy them all... lol

Th term "tool watch" is over rated and has been over miss-used in the recent times.... IMHO.

I wouldn't call my 16570 a tool watch exactly. However my next will be dress watch of some sort, the brand depends heavily on how long I can wait before pulling the trigger

Love both categories, but if forced to keep just one category...I prefer a good "Tool" mechanical to a purely luxurious one.

Really, for me, after running around the watch-buying block way too many times I've concluded the best "collection" (rotation) for me would be just two watches, something to this effect:

1) Exceptional Tool Watch (any modern Rolex sport model is favored, preferably an Explorer II or Deepsea. Other alternatives might be an Omega Ploprof, something from the JLC Master Compressor lineup, or a handwound Panerai) Practical, tough and readily serviced, this piece gets the lionshare of wrist time and accompanies me most everywhere. It isn't abused, but it isn't babied, and I expect it to be a stylish and iconic companion I can take anywhere, and see plenty of use/water/life in general.

2) Exceptional High-Luxury Watch--funds permitting, any of the following: Lange Datograph, any classic 2-counter PP or VC chronograph, an AP 2120-based perpetual, or a simple but gorgeous handwound dress watch (top manufacturer or independent maker). This watch is ALL about appreciating the traditional craft of watchmaking, and covers the romantic aspect of the hobby.
