So, has the Black Bay and Pelagos...

Changed your views of Tudor?

I realize many were Tudor fans prior to their release, but I'll admit, I never quite warmed to Tudor, I suppose I felt if I wanted a Sub, I'd get a "real" one, like many, I, as I have discovered unfairly, saw Tudor as a "cheaper" version of Rolex.

Something I'm desperately trying to teach my 8 year old son is that it's ok to be wrong, and important to admit when you are. And, I now feel I was wrong, and am quite pleased to admit it.

As I have gained more knowledge of Tudor as a brand in its own right, its genuine history, and particularly seeing some very appealing new models, and a design direction that is clearly more daring and (retro) than Rolex is willing to be, for the first time I find I'm appreciating Tudor and really considering getting one, where previously I had never considered it.

I credit the beauty and modern yet retro designs of the BB and Pelagos for showing me the way. :)

So my question is, anybody else like me, previously uninterested in Tudor as a brand, and now reconsidering your stance, due primarily to these 2 gorgeous new models? (and to some extent the Heritage Chrono as well)?

I like the vintage ones a lot more than the new crop. I feel the Black Bay is overpriced.

Yes. The Black Bay is what caught my attention.

What I would like to know is the type of movements Tudor had on its vintage models.

Really?

EUR 2600 seems like a pretty good price to me. Perhaps the premiums attached to those being sold in the US by grey dealers are a bit high but if you buy at MSRP it sure as hell isn't overpriced.

With all respect, I think you should rethink your feeling

Perhaps when Rolex sees these new retro vintage Tudors doing really well, in time, they'll start to incorporate some design cues into their own models. I always wonder if Rolex is testing the waters with Tudor.

As for overpriced, a friend outside the US just bought a BB from an AD for 3k out the door. The current price of a Sinn U2 isn't much less. Although I haven't yet seen the BB in person, I suspect much of your 3k is for other things besides the mvt. It seems like a gorgeous, impeccably crafted and finished watch, quality and qualities that cost money, generally. :) There really is more to a watch than just it's mvt, and that's ok IMO as long as its a good mvt, as this one reportedly is.

I've had a few Panerai with in house mvts. None worked properly, whereas the 7750 base Pam 24 I've owned for a while has been supremely accurate, consistant and reliable. So for me, in house, out-house :), the proof is in the pudding, and a top grade, well adjusted ETA can be exceptional, all you lose is the in house snob appeal, which I'll admit I do prefer, but don't require any longer. Depends on the brand.

Well said Ari.

I am probably known here as a rabid Tudor fanboy and so can't answer your question - I was into Tudor (blue snowflake) decades before I was into Rolex.

However, just to make an observation about the 'Real' sub or Tudor sub argument made by some, which of course, focuses on the only significant difference... the Rolex movement as opposed to the ETA Valjoux.

A couple of years ago I owned a 4 year old Rolex Sub and a 12 year old Tudor Sub. While the Rolex performed at an acceptable +7 sec per day, in repeated testing of my older Tudor, it was difficult to detect any significant variation over the period of a month.

I realize that this performance was probably in part a logistical fluke, but I think for me the primary value judgment of a movement would not be the label but the longterm reliable performance and accuracy. Therefore, for me, (as for good ol' Hans Wilsdorf and the French and US Navys), the Tudor was in no way inferior to my other Sub.

I welcome the popularity of the new Tudor models and hope they signal the brand's imminent return to the US where they can share the market acceptance of its slightly older brother.

I really like the design and innovation of the Pelagos but the price is high for me. Maybe when I go overseas next time I can save on the tax and get it duty free, plus is would make a cool holiday gift to myself.

I might know someone with a BB. Me!

To be honest, I didn't even know Tudor existed before these models came out. As soon as I saw the Basel write ups I knew I had to find out more. As you rightly say, they are more than Rolex's poor cousin. They are a brand with history and pedigree in their own right.

Still can't believe you admit you were wrong though. LOL. Now about that Pam 372

The RRP of the Pelagos is approximately US$5,000 on a titanium bracelet with the new innovative clasp (stainless steel) and including a second (rubber) strap (3 pieces).

That is a lot of chump change for me...

Tudor is now the Rolex test kitchen.

When the SubC comes out with the titanium case ( let me be the first to predict 2015) I am going to have a long difficult talk with the wife.

Is the Pelagos really 5k list? I thought it was closer to 4, and the BB close to 3 on strap?

PS.

Greg, we go way back, but I will fly to NZ... :)

No surprise I've been a Tudor fan for a while. Never thought I'd own a new Tudor till the Heritage chrono lease a couple years ago. The reason I bought one is because it has all the features I require and looks damn good doing it.
The Pelagos has really got my attention. Not sure if or when I'll own one but it's certainly on my wish list.
But most of all I'm proud of the brand. It's standing on its own while relying on a historic foundation and at the same time not afraid to stretch the envelope.
Well done, Tudor! Keep it up!

I am smaller than you. Only fair if we tie both hands behind your back

I think the RRP for the BB on strap is $3,200, on bracelet $3,500. Pelagos was around $4,300 AFAIK.

The Pelagos is a strong, coherent design - functional to the point where it is almost military. I thought it was interesting to read in another thread that some people find the highly functional clasp to be unattractive. So much for the desire for an indisputable 'tool' watch! (not that functional cannot be attractive)
However the Pelagos is, I think, derivative of the Rolex DSSD (as was the Hydro 1200)

I know they get a lot of love here, but I'm not so impressed with the Heritage line and would prefer to see new, fresh thinking. Nothing wrong with tributes to the past, but a bit more design imagination would be welcome imho. I'm looking forward to seeing what Tudor come up with over the next few years
