I am selling my SS Sub and am in the market for a more budget friendly watch. Looking for a 40-42mm non-chronograph automatic that can be worn on any occasion. Round case is also my preference. Omega, Ball, Fortis?? What recommendations do you have? I'd also love to see what's on your wrist. Many thanks.

I'd say IWC or Ball.

I have an IWC aquatimer. 42mm chrono day date, round and under the radar.

Hmmm... Grand Seiko SBGM023 GMT comes to mind. Round 40mm case, GMT, drilled lugs for easy strap changes, comes with bracelet. I don't own one yet but will eventually!

It's nearly identical to the SBGM021 GMT except the dial is more silver than ivory and the watch comes with a bracelet instead of leather deployant. You can get a GS deployant for it and find a strap for it (even the GS aligator strap) to cover any dress needs. It's quite the versatile piece which will make up for the $4700 price tag and you will still net some money after the Submariner sale.

Depends quite how tight the budget is. As some have said Ball represent amazing VFM.
Superbly well constructed and well designed watches.

Is budget the only reason your selling? One day the current watch will be worth more and the new one won't be worth anything.

I'd say get a used Omega Aqua Terra.

That ain't cheap and the resale aint good. (aint used for effect twice)

There's a lot of activity in this price band

And don't foget Stowa - very nice German-made watches, using ETA movements. Smally, friendly company you can deal with direct

If I had to narrow it down, would focus on Fortis and Ball ...possibly Oris as well if interested in a diver's watch (the 44 and 47 mm models are nice)

IWC or Ball get my vote!

Omega is a great brand but it has just never done it for me for some reason.

Also they do not fly much lower under the radar than Rolex.

If you want to reduce your investment, why not go with a Wilson Watch Works watch with the Unitas 9498/7 movement? For well under $1,000 you can have a pretty nice watch assembled in your home town. If you don't mind a junkier Seagull movement you can be under $400, probably.

You're absolutely right. Just trying to think of something sporty on bracelet yet dressy on a leather strap. As versatile as the Grand Seiko is it could possibly save some long term money.

I would add Nomos as it's another great German brand.
