Humidity and Storage

I have a 1601 DJ that I had serviced by Giovanni in San Francisco. He inspected the watch and asked if it was mostly used in a high humidity area because there was some damage. Is this an issue when storing a watch? I didn't think it would be but he was right. It was used in a high humidity area for a very long time.

I've never heard of this before. I'm guessing the seals were bad for a while to let the humidity in and do some damage to the movement.

Yup. The seals went bad. He removed the back of the case and showed me the damage. The watch hadn't been serviced in a long time and with a manufacturing date of 1960/61 I wasn't surprised. I asked him to service and clean the watch and not replace the case since there was some engraving and had sentimental value. Unfortunately this meant he couldn't guarantee the water resistance but that's okay. I have my other daily wears now.

As long as the seals are good should not be a problem myself worked for quite a few years as a diving instructor. And many of those countries far east had very high humidity plus watches underwater for several hours a day.The only main difference in any oyster case is the twin lock, trip lock and different W/R so if seals a good humidity should not be a problem.

Glad you were able to get it repaired and as a plus have others for a daily wear.
