Looks great but is it real or a figment of someones imagination?

Not sure. It was posted on my fb page by a close friend in NYC who's pretty up with these things.
Checking the web there is plenty of speculation (and I'd imagine this falls into that category) of an iPhone with slim case and elongated screen size as seen here. Materials are also as they appear. So, I'd say these are the latest assessments from the many speculative imaginations out there

From the web:
Speculation is mounting that Apple will announce a new version of its iPhone on 12 September and an "iPad mini" – a smaller version of its bestselling tablet – in October. Dozens of leaked photos and samples from Apple's supply chain point to a longer, thinner phone with a larger screen and longer battery life – and a new nine-pin connector on its base, to the dismay of hundreds of companies that make accessories for the 30-pin connector on existing iPhones, iPads and iPods.

It looks imaginatively too slim to me, with barely enough room for a decent size battery...
I hope I am wrong as a model this thin would really bring Apple back to the top of the heap.

iGlass® and iSteel® (it's better than 904L and light years ahead of 316L if you ask Apple Idiot Savants) makes for a tough combo
Rumor has it iPhone 6 will be made fully of iCeramic®. It is the same stuff that Rolex uses for its bezels, only Apple put an "i" in front of it My own iPhone4S sure could need a bit of iCeramic - it doesn't look to good after a nice dive onto asphalt...

In that case, chances are the iPhone 6 case will be made out of recycled bezel inserts from discontinued Rolex GMTs and Subs Knowing how well oiled the marketing departments of Apple and Rolex are, they will likely come up with a joint ad, spinning and milking the recycled story and "back to basics" theme for all it's worth It will also have the positive side effect of truck loads of die hard old school Rolex WISes suddenly turning to Apple for their mobile phone needs, since they appreciate Rolex steel inserts so much. It's a win-win

I read somewhere that it will be very similar to the iPhone 4S but elongated slightly to give a 4" screen, not given anymore width though. If it is like the above I will be standing in line for one.

I've been seeing some leaks as well, and the general shape has been consistent on almost all of them. These photos definitely show a thinner profile than any other speculative stuff I have found. The connector change has also been very consistent in the rumor mill. Am I the only individual user who is really bummed about that? I have many devices (home, office and auto) that will require adapters to function. Not to mention the convenience of one charger for multiple devices. Making us keep up with extra pieces and parts is a step in the wrong direction IMHO. Of course, it's all conjecture at the moment.

If anyone could make a phone that thin it would have to have some kind of battery technology which has not existed in the market before.

Honestly, I don't want it thinner! I get the thinner is better aesthetic, but there's a functional limit. Too thin, harder to hold, can break in half, most of all, less battery life. I think the 4/4s is as thin as it should be.
