Rolex Service Question

My buddy has a Submariner that has a scratch on the crystal. He wants to replace it. He is gonna send it to Rolex through Mayors. His question is how much is it gonna cost to replace, and will they give him his old crystal back? He is insistent on getting the old one back. Anyone have any experience with Rolex service that can chime in? Thank you

Usually RSCs do not return old parts.

I sent my GMT in for service at the RSC. They said the crystal was scratched and they suggested that it be replaced. I think it was about $136 and they did not return the old crystal.

I would also send it in to the RSC myself. That way Rolex will communicate with your friend and not the AD.

Absolutely agree. If you want any chance of getting the broken crystal back send it to RSC yourself and not thru an AD. Chances are still pretty slim you'll get it back.

Cannot understand why anyone would want a scratched crystal back unless it was a vintage watch with say a dome acrylic.Myself would tell him to wait until service time then crystal will be changed, but then there will be no labour charge as they have to strip the watch down.

Just curious - why would Rolex not return your used crystal if requested, or indeed any other part which you legally own? Surely it's entirely your business what you do with used parts which are yours? If I get the air filter changed in my car, the garage often leaves the old one (presumably just as proof it has been done), but I can't imagine him not giving me any other of my used parts he removed from my car.

Unless of course, Rolex doesn't actually believe you own your own watch, that you are merely looking after it for the next generation of Rolex shareholders...?

I have had parts from vintage models returned but only after insisting. Never on a modern model...not that I asked.
I replaced a crystal on a lv sub years ago and IIRC it was approx $150

As for Rolex not wanting to return old parts...they're fed up with old ratty parts appearing on the aftermarket at outrageous prices.

I do accept that point, Pete, but all parts of a Rolex watch belong to the owner, whether they are used or not. The solution to old ratty parts on the aftermarket is not for Rolex to illegitimately withhold a Rolex owner's property.

I couldn't agree more. It seems that Rolex think they still own your watch.
I would be seriously miffed if they kept a gold bezel, for instance, that had been replaced.

Most parts are on a parts exchange basis so if say a gold bezel had to be replaced, Rolex would offer you a part exchange price on the old one..
