Ceramic Submariner or Vacheron Constantin Overseas

Members -

I am looking for a watch than can be worn for "every" occasion. I mean from presenting at a board meeting to swimming with great whites, from eating at a Michelin rated restaurant to grilling in the backyard.

I went to an AD in NYC and tried on the ceramic sub - it felt very comfortable on the wrist, barely noticeable.

I also visited for Vacheron Constantin in NYC and they came out with a new Overseas model for 2012. Pics attached. Stunning piece! And they mentioned that the movement is now "in house".

I'm curious of your experiences with the Sub as well as if anyone has owned a Vacheron Overseas - what's been your experience with it, good and bad - accuracy, etc. It also might be nice to have something that is a bit more rare in the world of watches.

I've attached a few pics as well.

Thanks team

To begin with you are comparing two watches that differ considerably in character and also, quite relevant in our case, in different money leagues (the vacheron should be at least 40% more if I am not mistaken). The Overseas is "dressier" hence even more versatile, higher value, more complicated horologicaly (as a chronograph), less "worn" in the wild, plus I am a sucker for the blue dial... However the Sub is... the legendary Sub, what more can a man say...

Also, out of curiosity, may I ask why don't you consider the Daytona in that money (and complication) range?

I adore Rolexes but if the choice is between the two specific ones (and since, of course, you can afford it) it has to be the Overseas hands down!

I know the overseas is a VC and they are amazing...but gotta say I prefer the sub. If it was me I'd get the sub and with the money I'd saved get one of the vintage VC ultra slim dress watches from the sixties, they are awesome and then all bases are covered ;-)

The VC is in a different league. The ceramic Sub isn't even best in class - there are far better alternatives out there, the new version of it is uninspired to say the least. If you want the best option for an every-occasion Rolex, you need to be looking at a GMT - its nearest competitor is the Explorer II, can be dressed up or down, and is a formidably good timekeeper. It's a bold design change from the previous GMT, and is as close as you can get to perfection in a luxury watch

Both stunning! Just a simple obs: VC doesn't look like it's made for that diving part. No easy-to-grip bezel and easier to get scratched by shark teeth.

I know you asked for opinions on one or the other but have you considered the BlancPain Fifty Fathoms? Dresses up or down, lots of history, in house movement with five days power reserve.

A very basic cosmetic change, taking the watch away from its roots, and the movement has been around longer than I have. It's hardly a big step forward, and competitors like Omega, Blancpain and IWC are all producing better watches. Where has the pioneering spirit that created the Submariner in the first place gone?

VC every time. The new blue one is stunning and as an added bonus, you don't see one every time you turn a corner.

VC...I tried the Overseas Chrono and Dual Time on a few weeks ago, and both are extraordinary. I'm a big Rolex fan, but given the choice, I'll take that VC every time.

Well most people think it was quite a big cosmetic change, and I really don't see how it has taken the watch away from its roots, it was a tough diving watch and it still is. As for the movement I have never known an automatic as accurate as the SubC, so Im fine with that.

As for the competition, yes the po is a lovely watch (although I would say more in line with the deepsea, and then it just doesn't compete) smp doesn't compare. And nothing from blancpain or iwc really does it for me, just don't really have any x-factor, especially the fifty fathoms which is a bit of a sub rip off dressed up a bit

I'm making an assumption that you'll be spending more time in the board room.

So on that get the VC.

Success in the board room will mean you'll be able to get that Sub little later down the track for your vacation and swimming with great white's.

Good luck.

Unless one has a need for lots of dials and the accompanying buttons, it's all a matter of taste. I have my present GMT for sentimental reasons which are not worth going into. I would love to replace the bezel with a pepsi but am at a loss for the "how" of it.

And rightly so

It's anything but uninspiring.

The subC IMO was an intelligent design by Rolex. They made upgrades that were about wearability and that they saw lasting the test of time. It's a fantastic looking watch on the wrist and because of it's case shape, sits well across most wrist sizes making it appealing to the huge breadth of the population that makes up the Rolex sub market.

Smart thinking by Rolex ...enjoy yours. It'll be around for a while
