ROLEX Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA Challenge

This may be a dumb question but I am hoping that some of you can answer this for me. Does Rolex actually produce the ROLEX Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA Challenge? The one from National Geographic and James Cameron? This watch is a monster!! Thank you.

It's not a production model that I am aware of.

They did create the prototype for the dive...not something people would be wearing around. There is a DSSD though

yep, just a prototype. it's cool, but i'm not sure anyone would really want to wear the thing as an everyday watch!

At least at the end of this video we see the DSC being put in a Rolex box like the ones we get them in... Still, with a 51mm diameter and 28mm thick case, I strongly doubt it will ever be for sale to the general public:

Some day it may become an icon. I'm sure Hans couldn't envision the DSSD in 1920's

It's just for marketing.

It's a prototype that's way to big for any real world application (unless Flava Flav got it to wear around his neck.) I guess if it were produced some of you could use it to replace the green crystal paperweight. I think I read that Rolex has no intentions to produce it.

it's not unheard of to wear something that massive, but it would be a huge financial flop if they ever did produce one and sell it commercially.

the 20,000 Feet is 46mm and 28.5mm high!

A watch like that is a marketing gimmick. No practical reason to be wearing a watch like the DSC.

And I can imagine the price tag....

Not sure if anyone in their right frame of mind would want to wear that outside a deep dive...

It is also very valuable from an R&D perspective.

Being one of a kind (or very very limited), I don't think you could get your hands on one.

Well of course, but I doubt a lot of the technological "breakthroughs" and findings incorporated into that watch design is going to see real world use.

I wouldn't say that. At some point Rolex had to figure out how to dome the sapphire crystal or how to manufacture the titaniums caseack of the DSSD. Or how to make ceramic bezel inserts...or how to weld the new clasps...or how to manufacture SELs.

To me, there's nothing "obviously" reusable...but that's narrow-minded thinking. Perhaps they learned how to best mount a movement that's much smaller than the case...or a different way to polish crystals...or a new type of crown stem seal.

Who knows? I'm sure SOMETHING will come from it!

Absolutely, it was a technical exercise in using modern technologies to push boundaries. It was also a handy marketing exercise, and its gotten people to talk about it. Maybe it will help sales of the Deepsea too
