Gold lust has gotten the better of me ... an incoming hopefully in the next week ...
Well, here I am again ... at the point where gold lust has gotten the better of me. Since my journey started in March this year when I joined TRF, I've gone from zero Rolex's to six. Started off with a few SS models, then a RG, and then culminating in May with a plat DD. At that stage, I said to myself, and also on the forums, no more watches till at least next year. And no more Rolex's either as I've now gotten quite a spread of models, and it was now time to perhaps look at other brands for my next watch. I said, next year, though, not this year.
Being on TRF almost everyday, it's very hard to not get emotive when such wonderful photos of grails are being posted by members daily, especially in the WRUW threads. Over the last couple of days, there were a couple of watches that were catching my eye. I said to myself no, I am not to buy another watch till next year. Be strong, you can admire them, but you can't buy till next year. Since I live in a big city, and work in the city center, there are a number of watch dealers within a few minutes walk from me. Every week or two, I like to spend my lunchtimes visiting these dealers and having a look around to see what's new that's come in. So yesterday I go visiting my favorite AD. Just to see what's new, and perhaps check out the two watches that have caught my eye in some recent postings. Anything new? No, nothing new that catches my attention. They did have a AP Bumblebee and a Diver which I tried to love, but they just don't sit well on my small wrists. They had a nice VC Overseas in SS and in RG on a strap, they fitted me reasonably ok. But didn't grab me too much. I also tried on, for the 3rd time, a DDII. I've really really tried to love this watch, but still no joy, it just looks too big on my wrist for a dress watch. Anyways, I was more interested in the two models that I've been seeing pics of on the forums. I tried them both on. Yeah, I said, I want that one. So, I asked, what's your best price?? Well, they are pretty competitive, especially for Australia. Their best price came to within $1k of the TRF sellers for a BNIB watch but I'd have to fly out of the country to claim back the taxes. I wasn't planning on doing any flying soon, so I said, hmmm, I'll think about it. So, last night, I went on the For Sale section of the forums, and found the model I liked, and it just so happens, it was lightly pre-owned and at a superb price, much better than at my AD due to it being pre-owned. I've never bought off a TRF trusted seller before, and never off someone I've never met in person, so it's a big leap of faith for me. Contacted the seller, I immediately felt comfortable, so I said yes, lets do it. Tried to do a wire transfer from internet banking, but it exceeds my allowable limit on the internet!! Bugger!!!! Will go into a branch later to see if I can do it there instead without incurring extra fees. Can't wait for it to arrive!!!! |

Oh, Joseph Ducreux, you always seem to find the appropriate words for every possible situation!
Now Cary, I would like to congratulate you in advance for the gold piece you are waiting for! I can't wait to see pictures but given your exquisite tastes I can only imagine it will be a stunning timepiece!

Cary, watch out for the trusted TRF sellers...
I've bought 3 from a trusted seller in the US in just over 18 months, and it's saved me big $. Looking froward to your pics. Jules |

I've been feeling the same way lurking these forums recently about the gold lust. It's been a few months since my last major purchase, and now "the itch" for rose or yellow gold has become impossible to ignore. The enabling that is prevalent here on TRF is both educational and entertaining, but certainly isn't kind to the wallet!
Congrats! Can't wait to see your latest piece. |
