All I use is a Nikon Coolpix L120, a tripod (a small or a big one depending on what I shoot) and a lightbox. You don't need a camera with a whole lot of different lenses, nowadays a lot of affordable models have a macro feature that allows you to focus while zooming quite a lot and even when the camera is really close to what you shoot.

I used a Canon DSLR with a telephoto lens to get a good Macro. Important to set it up on a Tripod. I prefer natural light ( By a window) as opposed to a light box. Also, I avoid the flash. Have fun.

I use a Panasonic ZS7 point and shoot with a great Zeiss lens and a cool feature that allows zooms with the macro feature
