Sports Memorabilia
This is from the year of my birth and boy would I like to have this just to squirrel away somewhere safe.
I'd never sell a Rolex to fund one of these, but what about you? Anyone here think this is worth roughly the price of a DD? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...pf_rd_i=507846

It's worth it if you want it. To me, I hate baseball, but football ( soccer) memorabilia I would spend money on. I have a collection if programmes and used to have signed shirts etc. sporting memorabilia is a good hobby. If you like it and it means something then why not.
Cheers

Just like with a watch purchase, I would do a LOT of research to determine what the REAL value of that would be. How many of these exist? Have any sold before, if so for how much? Who's signatures are on the ball? Did every member sign it? If not who is missing? I would want iron clad certification that EVERY signature is real, not signed by a wife, secretary or bat boy. Honestly having seen my share of sports memorabilia I have never seen anything close to this price for a team ball. Just my $.02.

I find trying the gauge the worth of sports memorabilia a very abstract undertaking that requires a certain degree of random number generation.
In financial terms, the object's worth is purely what someone is prepared to pay for it. It's personal worth however, is immeasurable, so if it has special significance and is affordable to you, then I see no reason to hold back. I don't know anything about baseball so I can't really comment too specifically on your item of interest, but I think I can relate to it quite closely. Many years ago I had the opportunity to purchase a replica helmet personally signed by my "hero" Ayrton Senna for roughly the equivalent price of your baseball. It was too much for me at the time so I let the opportunity pass, but I have no doubt it would have been absolutely worth it for me! |

Well, it is "on sale".
If it was me, I would research, research some more and continue to research until I found a ball that hadn't been PSA documented. Granted if money is no object the PSA documentation saves you a lot of leg work but I bet it at least doubles the price of the ball. You can be about as sure as you can be that it's legit. What's your time worth? |

Well, to be honest, my questions are really rhetorical.
I'm not about to drop that kind of money on a baseball, even though the appeal to me is not the baseball, but the names on it and the fact that it is from the year of my birth. Everyone knows, that without the signatures, the ball might be worth the current price of a hot dog and a beer at the ballpark. And, of course, if I could afford to drop that kind of money on an autographed baseball from any era, it would never be for sale.

you know, there is some sports stuff I would love to collect (f1) and ALOT of music stuff I would like to collect as well
but I just cant get past the authenticity issue. for example, I once saw a programme for the ill-fated 1994 Imola GP, signed by 3-time champ Ayrton Senna. So, it was signed a day or so before he died at that race. They were asking, I think, around $300 or so (this was about 3 years ago). Seemed like an amazing bargain, which is why I passed it up. |
