Just got my 1st Rolex....SS GMT II Ceramic...now few Qs
Hey Guys, I've been checking out this forum since April '07 in getting my first automatic watch;-) I was between Omega and Rolex and ended up putting my deposit down on the SS GMT II ceramic a month ago. I wanted to get a Rolex before another price increase this year. I got a call from the dealer and received it yesterday. I've not worn yet b/c I'm having second thoughts. Here's the deal...I've always loved the look of the yachtmaster two tone w/ white face but felt it was dated with the new SS GMT II having the updated clasp, ceramic bezel, and other little updates. I want to know what should I do? Any advice would be helpful! I paid retail and no tax for the SS GMT II b/c I had it shipped out of state but they are willing to do 10% off the YM II two-tone and no tax if I want to switch. I'm really torn between the watches. Here's a little background about me...I'm about to graduate from dental school and head into a 1 year residency program and thought this would be a nice grad gift to me. I've been saving for this watch for the past year through investing and other means. The SS GMT II I feel is a great deal b/c it's selling for more on the market due to it's demand while the YM two-tone is selling for a lot less compared to retail. Also, which is heavier SS GMT II or TM two-tone? Thanks again....i have to admit the new clasp design and band on the new SS GMT II is solid and very sturdy compared to the older rolex models.

CONGRATS!
I would keep the SS GMT IIc! As an everyday watch, is is much more practical than the TT YM whose gold links gets so easily scratched and battered. Also the bracelet, as you say, is much more sturdily made on the SS GMT IIc. Please post some pics!

Rule #1 about buying a $6k watch: get what YOU want. Period.
The upgrades on the new GMT-II are imperceptible to 99.9% of the world (collective WIS gasp throws the planet slightly off orbit). They're not likely to significantly change your enjoyment of the watch if it's not the watch you want. I personally like the SS/Plat YM WAAAY better than the new GMT-II. The GMT supercase seems too wide for the bracelet, don't like the polished center links, and the bezel is too blingy. I don't have an opinion on the TT YM. Still doesn't matter--only YOUR opinion matters. |

You have to get the watch that really satisfies you. For me these watches are not really an investment...they are about having what I want and what I really like for a long time. I personally would go for the SS GMT IIc, as like Bo indicated, its probably a watch that will do well everyday and also look real nice when you are out on the town. The YM is really nice as well, but for a first watch the TT may not go as well when you are casual. Regardless of what we say, they are both outstanding pieces and in the end you need to be happy when you lay down that kind of money. Good luck!

Although the GMT II is a very fine watch and has the recent updated features by Rolex, it sounds to me like you might be much happier with the TT Yacht Master. If you are hesitating now, after seeing the GMT II in person, but are still longing for the TT YM--well, the YM might be more satisfying for you, at least emotionally on some level. Since this is going to be a graduation present you give yourself, you are the only one who has to be satisfied. Sometimes in life it's smart to make a decision based on a rational-objective basis, yet sometimes you have a choice which is more emotional than rational--both watches will serve you well, so why not choose the one which satisfies your personal emotional sense of satisfaction?

If it floats your boat get the Yachty!
Excuse the pun, if your not sure that the GMT IIc is for you know then it isn't. Go with your heart, forget resale value/investment. who cares what it's worth if its the one taht you want. f |

I got the SS GMT IIc last month myself. It is a great watch. I think the SS/Plat Yacht will be my next watch, I have satisfied my TT desire with a TT GMT IIc.
From the sounds of your post, you really like the TT Yacht. If so get it, as others have said when you spend this amount of money on a watch you need to get what you want. Afterall, these watches are not about need, Target can satisfy that for $19. Do what makes you happiest, the watch will last you a lifetime. |

As others have said get the one that strikes you. It'll be your watch for a long time. That's why they make different ones. There's really no "second place" here.

You've been given good advice...
Those are both fine watches and will each give a lifetime of enjoyment.. But, you are the one that will have it on your wrist day in and day out... |

All good advice. My opinion would be to keep the GMT for a good practical all around daily wearer. Buy a TT later as a dress watch (once you're hooked, you'll never get away with owning only one-finances permitted)

Wow...thanks for ALL the great feedback! Really some great points and views. I'm not sure what I want to do...i need to see the two-tone yacht master again to figure out what I want. Does anyone have a couple pictures of a heavily used two-tone YM? I want to see how the bracelet looks after some heavy use.

Ahh... buyers remorse. Did I get the right one? Should I have gotten the other? Been there - Done that with lots of different iems. Go look at the other one again, decide and then wear it for a while. It's a lot of money to buy the wrong one but the fact is that if it wasn't a lot of money you probably wouldn't care so much.
There is no WRONG choice. Both beautiful watches. Find the one you are most comfortable with. Then be more confident in your choice. Good luck.

first to CPTL(why don't you guys use your first name?): you're right, and congrats on your town giving us Ruthie Foster a hell of a blues/gospel singer who was at the Sunoco Performance Center at the Whitaker in Harrisburg, Pa. this past week .
next to AK430: can't stand the YM, except for that white dial! I understand the problem. So that's why CPTL is right. You'll end up 'flipping' and losing money, and lots of it if you don't get what you want. I know the resale value(right now) of the GMT-II Master, with ceramic bezel is very high, and don't know about the YM. Good luck! Best, Dan Last edited by unclesallie; 18 November 2007 at 08:15 PM..
