I was at a party store and noticed the owner wearing what appeared to be a DJ and almost complimented him until I saw that the second hand was ticking and not sweeping. I've never known a Rolex to do that. What gives?

Rolex did make an in-house quartz movement between 1977-2001, it was housed in the Oysterquartz case used for the Datejust and Day Date. The case is angualar in design and has an intergrated bracelet.

If it looked like a regular datejust it was a fake.

If it had a somewhat angular case and flat links to its bracelet, you may have seen an OYSTERQUARTZ Datejust. Below is my all steel oysterquartz ref. 17000. The bracelets are slightly different for the gold & steel, and the all gold version, but in general the cases are angular and the bracelets have relatively flat links.

That angular case with the brushed finished and bracelet looks sweet. Reminds of the AP RO.

Are they pretty rare? Never seen one like that before; and I live in Hong Kong with watch shops everywhere.

Some of the very first OQ were in a DJ oyster case later ones had the block new type OQ case.

You could the the reverse route if you like the case/bracelet style but want to stay with an automatic movement, a reference 1630 with a 1570 movement.

Interesting, I've never heard or seen that and I have several Rolex books. I know that the reverse is true, with a ref 1530 or 1630 you can get an OQ case& bracelet with automatic movement.

That's what I would go for. You get all the looks of an OQ, yet you get an automatic movement.

The ref. 1530 and ref. 1630 are cool, as you get the great looking OQ case with an automatic movement. But there is a significant premium for one of those (particularly ref 1530) compared to an OQ. I believe that Rolex at one time made the President model in a quartz version. It looked exactly like the day/date, but quartz and not mechanical.

I don't think so. The only Day-Date quartz models were ref. 19018 and 19019. They did not use the standard Day-Date case & bracelet with a quartz movement.
