TT Submariner Question

Question regarding older two tone Submariners...

My father purchased a two tone black dialed Submariner sometime during the early 90s. Not sure exactly when. When I was home recently I noticed two things about the watch that kind of raised my suspicion and I was hoping members here could weigh in.

For one, the clasp on the bracelet appears to be SS only. That is, there is no gold "center link" even though there obviously wasn't a true center link on the old style Submariner bracelet. It would look as if I took the clasp off a SS Submariner and put it on a two tone bracelet. Was it produced like this in the past?

Secondly, the divers extension does not stay pinned inside the clasp. When putting the watch on and off you need to fold the diver extension in but it does not lock like it does on my ~2008 Submariner.

I wish I had pictures and I apologize but I won't be back home until the holidays. My father is very very careful when it comes to purchasing things and I would like to believe he was not ripped off but my alarms started going off when I took a closer look at his watch. Having learned so much on these forums, they were details I never really paid much attention to before. I do know he purchased it when I was a child either in Bermuda or the Caribbean which is also raising my senses a tiny bit. It could be that the diver's extension is just broken but the clasp having no gold is the most concerning.
