Valuations/Sales and "What's It Worth" Threads

TRF gets a lot of "What's it Worth" threads, "My Grandfather just died..."; "My dad wants to sell his..."; and other assorted veiled attempts to sell or offers for sale in the General Discussion Board.

It takes fewer than 5 minutes to research almost any Rolex model and find what they are being sold for across the Internet. You are urged to search the Forum Sales Board if you are seeking an estimate of value for your watch, or search the Internet for prevailing values. TRF is neither a shopping service for you, nor is it a valuation service as value varies widely depending on condition and local economies..

TRF urges members not to make offers on such watches that pop up in these threads because most of the scams or bad experiences that have cost members dearly have been outside of the proper Sales Forum.. This rule is for protection of the membership and to control sales and buying to the proper board.

Your post requesting value, or any other post that appears to be a solicitation for sale or wanted-to-buy will be removed. Hints that it is for sale or veiled attempts at sales on this board will result in the thread being deleted..

Moderators will make the final decision if the Thread has merit and can remain and may, without discussion, edit the Thread to meet TRF guidelines.

All buying and selling is to be done on the For Sale section where rules and requirements are clearly posted.

I understand the reason, but I have mixed feelings.

Most people, including many Rolex owners, know very little about watches. I have friends who got a Rolex for the prestige of it (nothing wrong with that) rather than because of the automatic movement or orther horological reasons. They do not remove any of the extra links, and let the watch flop around like a bracelet. When I compliment them on their fine timepiece, I inevitably get, "Oh, this? It keeps terrible time." It turns out that none have ever wound their watches.

When some of our relatives have passed on, we have found various antique watches (from the 1930s-1940s) in boxes drawers, etc. It would be helpful to know if they are valuable for purposes of dividing them up, deciding whether to keep or sell, or even to fix and wear. Sometimes it is not worth to spend hundreds of dollars to fix a watch that is worth far less. For example, we got an antique Baume & Mercier chronograph (model 902). The crystal is broken and it has no strap. We took it to a watchmaker, and because of the complications, it is probably more expensive to fix than what it is worth. It has no sentimental value, so in the drawer it sits. Alternatively, if one is a very rare timepiece, that would be helpful to know.

Also, isn't TRF a reputable place to do research? Is eBay the only alternative?

I understand some people may be abusive, but if someone does post a photo bout the found watch, what is inherently problematic about spending 30 seconds to say their watch was a common or uncommon, potentially valuable, worth getting checked out by a dealer, etc.

Plus, there is always the fun "Antique Roadshow" aspect to finding a rare watch.

I think TRF can be an excellent place to learn about any vintage watches in our families, and by posting pictures and asking people for their comments, and opinions as to authenticity, condition, where to go for restorations services, what to "restore" and what NOT to restore, and in general, by sharing what you have (picture-wise) with the rest of us, we can and love to help out with our own personal input. That being said, anyone really interested can and should spend time doing their own research and searches, here and elsewhere, and not expect us to do your work for you.

Coming here merely to "Value" a watch is NOT what TRF is all about, we are a community of likeminded enthusiasts, who like to learn and share, with other likeminded individuals.....If you want to know what something is worth, you can very easily have your watch appraised locally, of course, paying the fair market value of such a service.

I must start by saying I am new to this forum and was not sure how to post this inquiry - this is likely the wrong thread but did not find one releated to the new Rolex serial numbers and ring markings

my primary questions are 1) when did the new random serial numbers start being used?
2) does this random SN correspond to the entry on the certificates and warranty docs with the watch?
3) when did they start using the "Rolex" engraving on the dial ring and is that engraved on all watches mens and womens oyster styles ?

I think the main reason for this thread to get it accross to people that this site is not here to keep you from having to do your own research. I know I love looking at some of the vintage time pieces "found" and seeing what the comments and values are said during the thread. It helps me learn as well as the person who owns the watch.
TRF is a great site to get help and to do research with but it is not an appraisal site or a quick fix from the owner doing his own do-diligence.
I think people will always be willing to give there opinions here and to offer help, (that is what makes this place great) but the site would become quite boring if every thread is nothing but "Is this real?", "What is this worth?", "Look what I found in my grandmas purse buried under the house and can you help identify it?"
