Submariner SEL

Hi all.

Wondering if someone can tell me if I'm missing something? I've got a 14060 Submariner, which has the original bracelet - hollow links, with hollow end links. Now this is the last of the classic sport Rolex's, but a lot of people seem to run down the bracelet, and avoid the watch because of it. I love the bracelet, the rattle doesn't bother me, the diver's clasp gives no issues though I never use it. My Speedmaster however came with a solid bracelet with SEL. I removed it and added a better looking older style Speedy bracelet similar in design to the 93150 bracelet on the Sub. The replaced bracelet is lighter, and therefore more comfortable.

When the watch is on the wrist, apart from the inconvenience of a heavier bracelet, to me it makes no difference. Apart from weight, does it really wear any different? I can't see it being a more reliable type of end link than a hollow type.

So my question is this. What is the advantage of SE Links, and does this feature really make one watch worth buying over another?

T.

I usually prefer the look of SELs. No gap between the end link and watch case. That's really it for me.

well you punk--->

i assume from your nickname i can call you punk? :)

i actually prefer your style bracelet with the traditional light clasp and end links. as speed pointed out, the SEL can fit tighter to the case, but when the original style light folded links are properly adjusted and the spring bars are straight and healthy, they fit just fine.

the traditional bracelet is perfectly robust and as you pointed out, and light enough to feel natural on the wrist. while i own a few subs and gmt's with SEL bracelets i still prefer the look and feel of your old style. i do not like the thick heavy feel to the newer style clasps, especially the glide lock...way too much goin on there for me. i also like the hollow links and head links as they look traditional.

enjoy your no date as it's a classic!

i often compare the SEL to a pair of ski boots. ski boots are uncomfortable to wear because they keep your foot and ankle perpetually in attack mode.

i find that the HEL are more forgiving and make for a better fitting watch. i like the look of SEL, but they just never fit right on me.

HELs are comfortable and coupled with lug holes makes for a great combination. The stamped pieces really give a watch that vintage feel. I'm a fan

I haven't noticed the Speedy wearing any different now that it has HEL's, but I have large a large wrist -8.25". I'm used to my bravelets rattling also.....it doesn't seem right when they don't.

I too like the older lightweight bracelets, makes the watch more comfy to wear.

I love the rattle of the HEL, lets me know my watch is still there! Seriously, try wearing an vintage GMT or Sub and you will find yourself checking your wrist to see if it's there because they are so light & comfortable. YMMV

I agree Scott. I handled a friends riveted bracelet last week and if you didn't know, you'd think it was won in a bubble gum machine.

I like the way an SEL looks, but now that I have a 14060M, I can honestly say that it makes no difference in terms of fit and no one can tell the difference, unless they know what to look for and even then the external difference is meaningless.
