Expectations on Appreciation/Depreciation of models

Can anyone provide insight on how well models should maintain their value over time.

I am interested in SS Submariner, SS/Platinum Yacht Master, SS Sea Dweller models, Explorer. Partial to dive watches though.

Any thoughts on which watch may best keep it's value or if the Sea Dweller is as "timeless" as other more mature models.

Thanks for your responses,

AA

Can't go wrong with the S/S sub, especially if you buy a gently used one here on the forum. The SD is an excellent pick as well and I think many are keeping their SDs for the long haul.

Buying a watch based on resale or investment is a baaaad idea. Stainless sport models such as the GMT and Sub will hold their value a bit better then the TT models but you will take a depreciation hit new. If you buy used you'll be able to skip that some.

My advice is to buy the watch you like and not based on some future value.

Historically, Subs and SD do well in retaining value. YM less so. But that could change in the future. Nobody knows. Just like the old Daytonas.

Please don't take this as an attempt to validate something I already have. I have owned a Rolex before but I didn't appreciate it and lost it and it was uninsured. I am going to make another investment and wanted another Sub but like the larger Sea Dweller. Just looking for opinions on whether they will remain as timeless as the Sub.

Then while looking for deals On nice watches I saw the Daytonas and GMTs and Explorers and kinda liked those too.

I think I want a Sea Dweller or Sub and seem to get the reaction from everyone here that its a cant miss way to go.

Thanks,

AA

X2. Why is it today that Rolex watches have come to be thought of as little more that will this go up or down in value. When I bought all my Rolex watches I just bought the model I wanted too knowing they would last a life time with just a little care. And if any of those watches gave me a good return on original price paid.Just think of it as a bonus on owning and wearing one of the finest mechanical watches over those years, Rolex watches are NOT all about ££££$$$$$ IMHO.

If your worried about the appreciation/depreciation, purchase a 2nd hand watch and let the original owner take the hit.

I bought mine second hand 12 years ago, and it has appreciated in value quite a bit over what I paid for it... not that I ever plan on selling it.

Go with the advice from many here, get the watch that you WANT the most rather than something based on potential future value. If the Sub and Deepsea are of interest try them on several times to see which is calling the most. Good luck!

The SD's my favorite Rolex. It's not going anywhere but on my wrist.

If you are partial to dive watches then find the one that's perfect for you, I bought several submariners before landing on the perfect 1680, though I may upgrade to a red sub if I feel like opening my wallet again for another submariner...

While it's always nice to have a well thought out exit strategy, ultimately identifying and then, if you can afford to, buying what YOU like best makes the most sense. Buying preowned will often allow you the best opportunity to minimize any future "hit" you may take (and should best address the "depreciation" issue), should you have to, or want to, sell it later on.

Bottom line is that if you buy what you like, and what you will enjoy wearing, at the very least, you will "appreciate" it more and more, each day!

Best of luck with your quest!

Subs should hold their value well, but there aren't any promises

Bet on subs and seadwellers and gmt-II all-non-ceramic and then add the magic ingredient "Time" and your $$ will be safe. Just look at historical trends.

I'd guess that the sub will hold its value best, of the ones that you listed.

If you buy a nice-condition used model, you'll avoid that initial depreciation. Further, if you keep it in decent shape, recent (i.e., last 10 years) trends would indicate that it could be a decent investment, too.
