Icon3 Thoughts on cartier watches...

Cartier Santos Galbee XL Steel.

Whats everyone's thoughts on Cartier watches as a brand, are they considered luxury or fashion?

Some models are nice however I have a hard time taking seriously a watch named after Korean BBQ.

They combine jewellery and 'haute horlogerie' which works out perfectly.
Cartier has a rich history regarding to watches.

@TS, I would consider them as luxury, this high-end level of jewellery and 'haute horlogerie' is not just fashion.

i like this as well... but wouldn't spend my money on it.

cartier has a long history with some amazing watches that are very collectable and fetch high premiums.... most of the current models are not those.
not sure how the new Calibre de Cartier in house movements stack up in current perceived value?

The 'regular' Cartier watches(the quartz solo and must de cartier series, etc) are indeed not very collectible and amazing, however the Rotonde de Cartier series is a whole different thing, all of these models feature in-house movements and some of them have very special complications like minute-repeaters and Tourbillon escapements.

And I think those very special and complicated watches in the Rotonde de Cartier series are very underrated and forgotten, because lot's of people think of the brand as just a jeweller with a few watches.

agree those movements may be exceptional, but i believe they are only recently in service, their longevity is still unknown?
look forward to them achieving high service and praise from those who understand their attributes far better than myself

Sorry, still more of a fashion accessory. Hopefully this will change as their own manufacture grows.

Nice watches but they're still made by a jewelry company. Not really my thing

My wife wears a Tank Francaise and I quite like it. I don't think she took it off during the last 5 years, except for the occasional cleaning (forced by me) and it has been rock solid.

thought I was the only one who had that problem. My wife doesn't like to clean the house either,..haha

BTW, I purchased a Pasha Seatimer Chrono 3 yrs back from dutyfree, before I learned of this forum. Love the details and its reliability. ETA movement works very well and I had no issue of it.
Seeing lots of Cartier replica on-line, which in a funny way leads me to think that it's value is recognised.

Always liked that Santos Galbee, but usually when I see them in the wild they are on a woman's wrist. I've seen a few preowned ones for half of what they cost new.

These Cartier remind me my wife's collection of vintage circa 1920s art deco watches. Some are plain and some are quite elaborate with guilloche dials and blued hands with nice working 17j movements, all of which she hasn't spent $15 for at local garage and estate sales. Quite the lucrative hobby as some have $500+ worth of gold in them (not many people know what .750 means or bother with a grams scale )

Even though I couldn't pull-off the Cartier men's watch look, I do respect them as a brand. But if I were looking for a real nice art deco "inspired" piece for my SO -- assuming she wasn't really into watches -- then I could find one for less than $100 and service it for $100 to equal $200 out the door.

Anyone knows who makes Cartier's non in-house movements?

Cartier has a rich history in watchmaking, I think they were the first to do a wrist watch. I like the design of severa of their watches (tank series in particular) but I don't think I would buy one due to concerns about the movement.

I believe JLC and ETA were the most used movements.

They are indeed just recently in service, I believe the 'oldest' model in this series was introduced in 2009, some of them are from last year (including the flying tourbillon minute-repeater).

It is a still a mystery who made the first wristwatch, but as far as we now know Patek Philippe was the first to create a wristwatch, it was watch specifically made for women in 1868.

Cartier was the first to develop a wristwatch for men (the Santos, 1911).

I think the mens gold tanks on a black strap scream class. I was at a very formal wedding at Rehoboth Beach last Fall and the groom was wearing one. And believe me, he could have afforded anything on the planet, and I mean anything!!!

Cartier have a well-earned place in horological history and heritage, IMO.

There's an interesting read (I hope) here

Gerald Genta designed the Cartier Pasha, and the Tank and Santos are iconic. No question it's a luxury brand, IMO.

Bought my wife a mens Tank Fancaise for a 20th wedding anniversary in 1999. She's lived in it ever since, only needed one service in all that time.

Tried to steer her towards Rolex or Omega, but she only had eyes for the Cartier. Happy wife = happy life.

They are very distinctive and recognisable (and copied). Not my thing, although some are very classic and elegant.
