Baume mercier 8869 or iwc pilot or Rolex or omega
Hey everyone!
I'm fairly new to the world of fine Swiss watches. And I wanted some advice on what to get for my first watch! ATM I saw a really nice b and m 8869 the other day that was 30% off, and went for 3.3k. but when I went home to look more into the b and m I found out that they lose there value quite a fair bit . so I have been looking at the omega speed master the iwc pilot and not quite sure about a Rolex but I am open tO what your opinion and advice. Thank you. |

get what makes YOU happy. If your worried about extreme depriciation go with a rolex or iwc. I would avoid the Baume & Mercier. They're not horrible watches, I just think your moneys going to be better spent on a little bit more expensive brand.

Very happy with my new Rolex DeepSea.
If I were adding a watch that was not a Rolex on your list, it would be the IWC Top Gun Miramar. The Baume Mercier would not be my choice because I think it will lose too much value over time - but that is just me. Keep in mind the Panerai 389 as well. Please disregard all that I have written if you don't like big watches!!!! |

I actually like big watches!
Especially the big pilot, planet ocean and the navitimer but I like to have a variety. |

If Rolex will make the Daytona a little bigger, I will be the first person in line to get it.

Second, I think you have a lot of homework to do before making a decision as it seems you are all over the place in terms of what you are looking for. Your set a budget of $7,000.00. That takes the Big Pilot out of the picture, even used will be way more than 7K. However, the IWC Pilot Chronograph 3777 is within your budget and is by no means a small watch. The new Planet Ocean and Navitimer are within your range. If you like Breitling I would recommend looking at the new Navitimer Chrono with the in-house movement. You mentioned the Speedmaster. I don't think anyone would fault your for choosing that one. All Rolex models are pretty much out of the equation unless you go pre-owned. Bottom line, you've mentioned chronographs, pilot watches, divers - your taste is kind of all over the board. I recommend researching the brands individually on this forum and even on other watch forums. Then going to some shops and trying on different models/brands side by side to help eliminate some from the equation. Be sure to post questions you might have along the way. Then when you get down to the final 2 or maybe 3 specific models, let everyone know and I think you will get some helpful feedback. It also helps to let everyone know what other watches, if any, you have, how old you are, what your daily attire consists of, what you will be using the watch for, etc. This will certainly help others point you in the right direction. Good luck in your search. |

Alrighty I am going to hold off spending and of my hard earned money on getting my first watch for now and do more research on all the respective brands out there.
Thanks for the advice cuts33. You have been very helpful! But here's a little bit of information about me. I'm 22 turning 23 this year, the only watch I have ATM is a Japanese made battery operated chronograph watch. And I will be using the watch for everyday wear as well as having that fancy news to it |

Spend $2K on a Speedmaster and save the rest of your money.
You're young and you're still in school. Why not take that extra $5K left after buying a Speedie and invest it into something, so you can get yourself a Patek when you're 30. |

If this might become your only expensive watch, I always suggest getting the best Rolex (used if necessary) that your budget will allow. You can always get parts and service anywhere in the world.
However, for $2,500, you can get a Speedy Pro in excellent condition and have one of he world's most iconic watches. The others you mentioned will all depreciate dramatically if you pay msrp and won't hold value over the long term nearly as well as a Rolex or Speedy Pro. |
