I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks are the best value/bang for buck pre owned Rolexes?

It seems like Submariners, Sea-Dwellers and Daytonas are the most popular on these forums and the contemporary models also hold their value the most. Other contemporary models like Datejusts and Presidents seem to have really significantly lower pre owned prices compared to their new prices.

Tell me what you think and give some examples of watches that you reckon are nice watches and really good value in the pre owned market.

The best deals are on the less popular models. That would include the Air King, Oyster Perpetual, DateJust, and probably the Explorer.

Gold and two-tone models tend to take a big hit in the secondary market, also.

There are also low prices on the most popular models. I think high volumes of new sales create large pre owned markets. There's heaps of Datejusts and Presidents around so someone must have bought them new/liked them.

I agree two-tone models seem to come off in price significantly. I dunno why that is. I actually like the two-tone in many watches and they seem quite popular. Again maybe that is because so many were bought new there is a very active/deep pre owned market?

I also think (no offense to anybody who ones them) that Datejusts and Presidents are more conservative looking/more of an "old man's" watch. Where as Subs, SDs and Daytonas etc have more complex/contemporary/progressive designs?

No offense taken, but I am an old man and I do own a DJ, but I also own a Submariner and an Explorer.

The DD and DJ now come in 41mm models, so there seems to be room for a diversity of tastes, young and old.

A lot of young people wear the DJ. I'm 27 and my TT DJ looks awesome no matter what I wear. The beauty of any Rolex is that it looks good on you no matter your age or dress!

The 1603 DJ can be had for a song. The 16570 black dial Explorers, under $4k and some way under. AK 5500s, $1300-$1800.

Datejust is the bargain Rolex. They made and sold ALOT of them and they were the less expensive which is why they sold many of them.

Several cheaper Rolexes new like Air-Kings, Cellinis, Dates, Explorers, Oyster Perpetuals etc.

So many good ones that I can't name all. Older stainless Subs are always good. Also, two tone Zenith movement Daytonas are also great, as the stainless steel Zenith Daytonas are very, very expensive now and the two tones are thousands less. My guess is that they will never be worth as much as stainless models but as the Zenith Daytona gets more rare, these watches will become far more desirable, despite the TT Daytona being less popular than the other variants.

Surprised no one is saying Presidents. Heaps of Presidents around that were $30-$33k new in pretty much perfect condition for around $10-$12k. Some of those are a lot of watch for 10 grand.

The Air Kings are just such good value. Simple and understated. An opportunity for those who don't need their watch to be noticed by other than themselves.
Vintage Cellinis (of which there are several very elegant models) are good value as they are robust, do not all look like a dress watch, and are usually well priced.

TT GMTc, arguably the nicest TT out there, can be bought used for under £6K while the full gold used would be £14K at best, so the TT costs much less than half of its full brother.

A sub is the way to go! If you like the look of a TT, you can normally get a better deal on a TT vs a SS. The TT sub with the blue face is a classic that can be had for a great deal.
