Rolex shipped to Malaysia

Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone here has sent a Rolex to Malaysia? If so, how was it sent and how was it insured? I need to insure for $11,000. What about taxes and customs? Will I be responsible or the buyer? Thanks in advance guys.

first things first, congrats on your sale.

tax/duty is borne by the importer. i dont know if declaring it as a gift will make it any better for the importer, and i've heard some sellers saying that if you ship the watch seperately it could reduce the tax.

also ive heard that some seller use a third party insurance broker, thus they can mark the postal papers as 'watch value:us$100', and have it insured for US$11,000 without customs knowing (thus paying duty/tax on the lower amount)

honestly ive never tried, and wouldnt know, so dont take my word for it.

Do not ship a watch to Malaysia - too much fraud. Don't ship a Rolex out of the US - US customs may keep it.

Agreed...shipping overseas is risky as it is, but Malay would be even more so. Hopefully you didn't get paid with a cashier's check.

Well guys, I haven't sold yet. There is a guy interested and he's willing to do a wire transfer but I'm still not comfortable yet on sending this watch. I just wanted to get some input from someone who has shipped to Malaysia.

im not sure which part of m'sia, but i know some people do use s'pore as a primary shipping area, then take it into m'sia by car.

yes, they do customs check at the checkpoints, so it become a bit of a challenge to slip it thru customs

Malaysia is duty free, so no customs hassles or taxes. As long as you can insure it and use a Carrier with a good rep such as DHL, UPS, or Fed Ex you should be OK. I would make sure you talk with the buyer and make all arrangements before hand with him. Also make sure you get your funds before ship. Make sure fully insured.

Personnally, would not sell to a country outside of the USA, unless I was doing it on a face to face basis, just less hassle overall.

Also, Marshall, FYI, I had BNIB Rolex shipped from a AD to Bagram APO via Registered Insured mail. No issues at all. Took 3 weeks to arrive.

Malaysia impose a very high tax on Luxury goods and watch is one of them.

There is no tax on luxury items such as handbags, pens, watches. All duty Free in Malaysia, unless something has just recently changed. That is why you can get good deals in Malaysia, and why Malaysia uses this as a marketing tool. Unlike thailand to north or singapore to south, where there is a tax added and you ahve to go through the hassle to get a tax refund if you are a tourist. And why many Thais find it cheaper to fly down, spend night at hotel in Malaysia to buy a high end watch, rather than buy in Thailand.

It is buyer's problem regarding tax. Seller must insure the watch. Malaysia is not Africa/Nigeria.... so if everything done perfectly, it will go smoothly. Check the US customer as well.

I found Malaysia to be cheaper in price than Thailand and the same as in Hong Kong. Malaysia is duty free and a great place to visit. IMHO, the best kept secret in Asia! Malaysia, truley Asia! LOL LOL

Sorry mate, I live in KL and I can tell you quite certainly that there are no taxes on watches, pens etc in Malaysia. Premiums maybe, but hell, that applies anywhere. You can walk through customs with a million dollar watch or tv set or hi fi components and they can't do a thing about it.

But Ron, I'd like to echo Chad, if you send using UPS, DHL, TNT with full insurance, then it shouldn't be a problem. I've had things like bags, and watches sent to me by relatives from NY and CA, no problems.

Wow....that's a sweeping statement.

I would suggest it's a little inaccurate as well given that it is an Islamic country where punishment for theft is extreme.

I was a week in KL in 2001 and I found it a fantastic place. The food was terrific.

If it were me I would also call your own bank and create a separate account. Then give the aba routing and new acct number to the buyer to send to. Upon receipt trxfr to whatever acct of yours you want and close the new one. Otherwise follow the buyers instructions to the tee, if they make legal sense.

Hahaha, it must have been my luck then.Drove through Causeway and was taxed on my used remote-controlled plane and used LCD TV.Paid a total of RM$200.And yes,of course I got a receipt for it. Do you shop for your luxury goods in Singapore or back home?

Umm............I am curious as to why some do not like to ship outside of the USA? If I wire someone money from my Bank account........, I would expect them not to have any hassle in sending me my watch. I mean all you need to do is create a receipt and it should pass USA customs with no problems.

some of the malay customs are notorious for taxing the littliest of things.

i once had a keyboard in my car, and it got "taxed" - RM100
my staff took 3 btls of emulsion (sampling) and they demanded RM250, when clearly it was of NO commercial value.

so for me, i buy my luxury goods in Singapore, not worth the hassle, then you have warranty issues, etc. just pay the extra tax in s'pore imo

Marshall, please be very carefull with respect to import duties, and worse....the brokerage fee. My company exports all over the world, and have found that certain carriers will add significant brokerage, duties, and misc fees to expensive shipments. A pallet of product, valued at $2200 USD was assesses a $125 homeland security/terrosism fee, and this was not disclosed prior to shipping. Even if you advise that the consignee (the recipient) pays all fees, you will be stuck with them if the consignee doesnt pay his bill. Read the fine print CAREFULLY...its very onerous.

We fought FEDEX for months with respect to this BS.....we ended up closing our account with them.

Hmmmm....let's play this one out.

You ship the watch.

Your bank finds out several days or weeks later that money was wired from a stolen account.

Your bank returns the money to the originating bank - and you're responsible for the chargeback.

The thief, who is in another country where the police give somewhere in the neighborhood of "jack" and "sh*t" about your complaint, is laughing his butt off with the watch.

This risk-reward part of this equation escapes me.

Ron seems like a nice fellow, and suggesting to him that it's a good idea to send his watch (which is highly desired in the US and would bring him very close to what he wants $-wise in the US) halfway across the planet to someone in Malaysia, where he has essentially no recourse should something go wrong, seems extremely irresponsible.

got to chime in here -- please be very careful with buyers from Malaysia -- there are plenty of people around (closer) that would love to purchase your watch -- i have been a collector for many years and have heard terrible horror stories of lost money and watches to these scam artists

We've been in business long enough, to have learn a few things along the way.....
We throughly research and investigate all international orders VERY carefully with our fraud department and bank. Nearly all of the Malaysian and Thailand orders are declined. :( Those seem to be the worst countries, and its a shame that a few crooks give the whole country a bad reputation for honest business.

You're deploying soon, you'll need all of your concentration for the task at hand. If this deal goes bad, you won't be in a position to do much about it and you certainly won't need it weighing on your mind. I say, in my limited experience of an opinion, is go with odds and pass on this fella's Malaysian offer.
