Pricing a 1601, and where to find it?
Looking for a gold 1601 DJ with a leather strap, I see wildly varying asking prices for watches from ca. 1965 to 1980, around $3k on the low end and $4.5 - $5.5k on the high end.
In addition, recent selling prices on ebay are between $2,600 and $3,500 (not Pop's Oil Change and Jewelry, but by dealers). Should I - with patience, caution and plenty of research such as Orchie's list – look on ebay, or do you all recommend going through dealers only, such as those mentioned here http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=180461 Many thanks! |

First of all. The prices you mention are way to overpriced for a simple 1601 without steel bracelet. Look around at the VRF (Vintage Rolex Forum), that should give you an idea. And secondly what you have to watch is that the dial fits period correctly to the case and that it is not repainted. You do not have to buy from dealers, as long as you are confident with the seller, the watch and the conditions of sale.

Over priced, I agree
and most of them have been put together or polished to death. Like the 1803s, the 1601s were offered in both bracelet and exotic strap versions. Funny thing is it cost more back then to purchase the extra lizard strap with the 14K buckle than the TT jubilee. I've got one that was worn for the first 6 months or so in 1973, and has been sitting in the safe since then. The strap has stiffen to the point that it has cracks and have to be reconditioned to be worn again.

To the OP - assuming you are going shopping online for this watch, look here on TRF first! Good luck in finding what you want! |

Thanks so much guys... And sorry I wasn't clear in my post: I did mean solid gold case, correct.
Also, I'm heeding your advice and focus primarily on TRF now. It seems there is a lot of junk offered elsewhere. And if it's real (like a lot of offers on Chrono24) it's mostly located in Europe and means a conversion rate of currently $1.35 per 1 Euro. Oouch. |

Here's a rather nice one. Not gold, but unique altogether from a trusted member on the forum:

A stainless 1601 should set you back 2$k. I recommend betting a 1601x, a little newer. Looks the same. But has the quickset. All three if my rolexes have slowset dates. They are a pain

Haven't seen any 1601s lately but here's a nice earlier 6605:
