A gentle reminder of what this hobby is all about...

I've been at this hobby a good many years and have enjoyed it tremendously...
I recently gave my middle son (24 yeas old) my Matt Dial 16800 to wear (And one day I have no doubt, it will be his.)
He put the watch on...
There were no questions about whether the case had been over polished or not...
No concern about whether the date code on the bracelet was correct...
He didn't ask if the dial was original...
He just looked at the watch, smiled and was thrilled...
It reminded me of the first time I put a Rolex on oh so many years ago...
And it also reminded me of why I got involved in this hobby in the first place...
These are beautiful time pieces...Functioning works of art...
It is certainly important when spending large amounts of money to do ones homework and ask the right questions...
The knowledge I have gained has helped me own some wonderful examples and has helped me avoid getting cheated...
I only hope I never get so caught up in the "minucia" that I fail to see and enjoy the beauty that are these watches...

Well said. My 14-year-old son has asked for one of my Rolexes, but I don't think he's ready, and he's certainly not ready to appreciate the vintage qualities. Sharing these timepieces with your children is certainly a great part of the hobby, especially if they don't nitpick like, well, a lot of us do. Nice story.

I will also add that this site has saved me from ever having to waste money at an AD again.

Agree 100%. We all learn as we go. We all have should've/could've moments, but in the end, being happy with what you have in front of you should matter most.

Lovely

And so nice to read a thread without mention of the dreaded 'resale value' topic. As Larry would say, "TRF is not a shopping forum" !

I wear my Dad's 1680. I was with him when he bought it 35 years ago and have loved it from that day. Last year I was unlucky enough (if you know what I mean) to inherit it.

Next to my 216570 and Seamaster, there's just no comparison.

I'm not knocking anyone who buys vintage but IMHO, there's no substitute for a watch with real history.
