Submariner Dilemma - Fake Bracelet, All Else Authentic

Here's the shortened back story & I apologize beforehand for the short novel - bought a pre-owned 1999 16613 from a reputable Jewelry store (not AD) and took it to RSC in NYC to have a permanent link removed since the bracelet just didn't fit properly with all the removable links already removed. Rolex immediately told me the bracelet was fake and would have to evaluate the watch for $150 to determine overall authenticity. I decided to go with it and Rolex determined the watch itself was authentic, just the bracelet was not. Rolex did say the crown needed to be replaced and recommended an overall service but that is because Rolex was not the last entity to service the piece.

I contacted the Jewelry store and they said it must've slipped through there Quality Control process when they originally purchased the watch and want to make good by me. They have given me the following options and just wanted some feedback from members here:

1 - full refund
2 - change the bracelet
3 - replace the entire watch same year (a week to source and evaluate)
4 - upgrade me to a 2004 (gold through the clasp) for $900 - taking into consideration my money spent at Rolex RSC

I'm already cost price into the piece, +$150 for the Rolex Evaluation and will have to spend another $150 to evaluate any other watch they send me for obvious reasons.

Thoughts, Ideas, Questions??

If the extra money is not an issue (i.e. if the deal is still good for you after the added cost), I would go with the upgrade. After what happened, I would even try to include the evaluation of the new piece in that extra cost as well.

I would go for the upgrade. You will not miss the $900 after you wear your watch over time.

I would change the bracelet and request the 150 bucks the RSC charged you. If and when you take the bracelet to the RSC for link removal and the same thing happens again, then we can discuss further options.

I would not hesitate to purchase from this store, they are honest despite the fact that they unknowingly sold a watch with a fake bracelet.

Do you like the new bracelets? I do, so I would go with option 4.
Otherwise, I would go with option 3.

I agree on 4 would much rather have an 8 than 13 year old watch with gold thru clasp but try to pay $700 on top, bearing in mind the trouble theyve caused you.

#4. You won't notice the $900 after a few years.

I would do #4 also but only after having them pay RSC for verification of this newer piece. Otherwise #1.

+ 1 Seems reasonable and justified!

1st ask for the evaluation fee back, as you should not have had to do that,
Then upgrade and evaluate the second one. Pay yourelf if its OK, if anything is wrong make them pay and get a full refund [2x and there out in my book].

I countered $700 and they came back with $800. I'm going to take the upgrade for $800 but will try and squeeze a portion if not full $150 for the RSC assessment that I will have to get done.

Would also like to mention as you are looking to have a permanent link removed, to make sure you get the original number of bracelet links from up-dated model you are considering as these are expensive links and you might need them if you resell.

Good Luck.

I'd go with a full refund plus the $150.00 you spent at RSC and go elsewhere for a watch. Try the trusted sellers here on TRF...

Take it easy.....Leo
