GMT II with Roman numerals?
I went to my AD today because I've been smitten lately by the white face explorer II. Something about the black hands and black lume surrounds is just attractive to me.
While there a coke GMT II winked at me. The lady pulled it out and its stunning. Then she pulled out a second one and told me to look carefully at the way II in GMT Master II is written on each. Sure enough they were different. She then told me that one had Arabic II and the second and Roman II and that she's never had a GMT Master II with Roman II before. She believes its a mistake of some kind or a little game Rolex likes to play. She felt it may be a worth while investment to consider the GMT with the Roman numeral II. I put the Explorer II and the coke GMT II side by side and darn it. Not an easy choice. In the end I asked her to hold the Explorer II. I had my LV, white SS Daytona, and my DJ Everose to compare all the watches side by side. In the end we all felt the GMT II was too similar to the LV in overall looks and I have nothing that looks like the Explorer II. The white dial on the explorer is so white, it makes the Daytona seem a bit cream in color. Sitting now, I am tormented by which to get. I can't afford both right now, but I would like to know more about that GMT with the Roman II, any info is appreciated cheers W

I can try to take a photo of both tomorrow. I didn't think about taking my camera with me to the AD. To be honest, I will feel a bit like a weirdo standing in this fancy place taking pictures :) Wait a minute...I am a weirdo!!!

It's appeared on a couple series. I'm not sure it's as rare as ADs like to say, but if you're going to get one may as well go for the arabic.

This has been raised before & as far as I'm aware its just a different font dependent on the runtime the manufacturer, as simple as that, it's never gonna be the same as the beautiful cream Explorer.
IMO it'll probably be 50 years before one is more valuable than the other & as the 16710 (either font) is no longer in production both will be venerated in equal proportion Can't help you as to which to get (Explorer / GMT II), the decision is yours but I reiterate that the 16710 is no longer in production, anyway heres pics of mine to "torment" you further, lol |

OH!!!! You are EVIL!!! :)
I can't get over how white the Explorer II dial is. My Daytona looked pale in comparison to the whiteness of the Expy...

Excellent photos Mike! Thanks for clearing this up. I guess I should buy what I like. The AD actually had 2 white face expy II, both brand new, one with the holes in the lugs which has been in their safe since they got it in because they lost the cert. and the other is new model with the no holes in the lugs. She offered me the one with no holes for $4250...she believes she can knock off another 5% off the one with holes in the lugs. Not sure its worth the savings. I do prefer the practicality of the holes in the lugs.
Anyone care to torment me further? cheers W

Unless you are a collector of specific vintage models I would say don't think of your purchase as an investment - it's not. Buy the one you enjoy the most.

Well its settled...An expy II will be in the collection. I can't wait for the day my oldest daughter goes to college and graduates for me to take it off my wrist and put on hers.
cheers W

Personally, I like the II better then the ll. I believe it was the ll that was talked about being a mis-print or as mentioned above, it may be Rolex messing with our heads.
