What is a random serial number?

What does it mean when they say random serial number? Does it effect the value? Thanks.

They are 8 digit serial numbers that are random. They first appeared, I beleive in 2010. I don't beleive they make any difference whatsoever in value.

I'm not trying to be funny...but if you do an advanced search on random serial you will know all there is to know in very short order.

The point is...Rolex hopes people get less fixated on Internet date charts and don't try to weasel discounts with ADs by claiming the watch in their display case is "X" years old.

Strange that this is only starting recently... Perhaps the most recent economic down turn has left too much inventory on the shelves....

The only difference the so called random serial has it has one extra digit now a mixture in total of 8 digits instead of 7.And it will make no difference on the effect of the value.

Well as Rolex have never issued any charts when or any information when any serial started or ended. All the charts are based on information passed on when a case serial was seen at the various ADs. Now the so called Randoms started to appear late 2010 into 2011 with a few other single letters like GXXXXXX and at the moment mainly on the high volume sellers in SS we have G and six numbers and the Random 8 digits all running the same time frame. But all these Internet charts could ever tell us is a approx date when a case/clasp was stamped. Now these approx dates are not always when the watch was made, especially the slow sellers like gold TT etc. But at the end of the day they are all just case serial stamps much like you get on say a TV.And when bought new from AD no matter the case stamp they all get a full two year warranty, and in most cases will outlast there owner with just normal routine service.

Not strange at all, it's simply a case of available numbers. If you have a letter followed by 6 digits, if you used every number from 000000 to 999999, that would give you a million serial numbers per letter of the alphabet. The Rolex have been using the letter + 6 digit system since the 1980s - with a current annual production of 750000, they've simply run out of letters. So, the new 8 digit random alphanumeric system has been introduced as it gives a near limitless number of individual combinations. Them taking away the ability to guesstimate when a watch was produced (which is spurious at best) is simply an added bonus as far as they are concerned

Value is not affected. It's just all in the mind.
