Need my fellow members' advice on a personal subject
Gentleman and ladies of TRF,
I am seeking your advice on a topic that has been on my mind the past few months. I am torn on what to do and was hoping that my fellow members could share some of their opinions with me.... Next year will be my 10 year wedding anniversary. A milestone, to say the least. I have always wanted a Rolex ever since my father got his and I saw how much he loved his DD. As the years have passed, I had chances to get one but for one reason or another, I decided to put the money into different investments. For my 10 year anniversary gift to myself, I want to purchase my very own Rolex. I also want to get my wife a gift as well. However, we will be undergoing In-Vitro Fertilization treatment in a few months and needless to say, the cost of that will be substantial. We would be paying the treatments off over time because unfortunately, the procedure will not be covered under medical insurance. My question is...should I still try and save to get the Rolex? I will get my wife her gift no matter what but I feel guilty making such a big purchase for myself when we will still be paying off our IVF treatments. On one hand, I feel that it's our 10 year anniversary...a milestone that only happens once. Everytime I look down at my wrist, that Rolex will remind me of that milestone. On the other hand, my responsible side says that I should use that money I would be setting aside to pay off the debt first. I am sorry that this was such a long post but I wanted to give out as much info as possible. Thank you all in advance for your responses..... |

No brainer to me.... the gift of a baby is better than any material item. Use the money for the treatment.

Easy. Hold off on the watch. It's just a watch.

Sounds like if the question is should you do both, or not get the Rolex as well?
If so, it sounds like you should hold off on the Rolex for now. Definitely get the wife something though lol

Welcome aboard! It will be yours and your wife's anniversary so the milestone is both of yours. Some will argue that not putting that extra money towards paying off the IVF bill will make no difference to it's outcome and yet some may say Karma is Karma. I wish you good luck and hope success will bring you a child.
And maybe THAT GIFT and a Rolex to celebrate would be the best of both. R |

Sort and pay the IVF off first.
It's just a watch. |

I think putting off the rolex will be easier to explain than putting off the baby

I wouldn't over-extend yourself, but if you could do both why not, you only live once and it's something you've been wanting to commemorate a major milestone. But given the choice, baby comes first, good luck!

The answer's obvious. Forget about the watch for now and take care of the IVF expenses.

I would say do both only if you can REALLY afford it (it doesn't sound like you can or you wouldn't be asking). Otherwise go for the IVF. A watch is a thing and a baby is a person... go for the person.
You can always get a watch another time. |

Seems like you're in Vegas! I would say that if you want to do something really nice for your wife then spoil her at any one of the hotels/resorts there. If you think you can afford a Rolex then you can probably afford a night or two out... give her a spa treatment.
Forget the Rolex for now. |

It's only a watch. They are not going to stop making them. There will be plenty of time to get another one.

It's a watch. Get over it.
A baby will change your perspective, for the better, for ever. Wait until you have a baby to even think about a Rolex again unless you can cover the cost with unused disposable income. |

I will agree and disagree.
If the baby is the priority, than its a no brainer. However, I think babies are way overrated. I say skip the baby, go on vacation with the misses and buy a matching pair of datejusts.

Like others have said, the watch will always be there to get later. I agree that the priorities should be the baby and your family's financial security. Congratulations and best wishes sent your way! |

Please forget the watch and save for the babies. With IVF, you might end up having twins.
I wish you all the luck in the world with your future son or daughter or son AND daughter. |

Happy Anniversary! We just celebrated our 10th earlier this month....a milestone indeed!!!
I'd agree with what most have said here...IVF first and the watch later. Just more sensible. I wish you and your wife the BEST of luck! |

Save for and pay off the IVF.
Then, when the Child is 1 buy yourself the Watch, wearing it will make you think of your Child every time you look at it. When the Child is 18, pass on this Special (to you both) Watch to the Child and treat yourself to another!! Even if you are blessed with a Girl, the fashion for larger watches even on women will still likely be there so it won't look out of place on her wrist. Just a thought. JC |

Are you serious with this thread? Pay for the treatment, or go into debt and get a watch?! As they say.... Come on man!

Agree with the masses here, work on the IVF then get the watch plenty of life ahead. In the meantime, help pay for the Doc's new Rolex
