GMT - G serial or random?

I would apreciate your help, so please give me a piece of advice on this:

I am now looking at two watches, both new, with box and papers, but one is a cheaper G serial and one is a more expensive one random serial.

Would you pay more for a random serial? Are there any diferences between these models except the serial no? I know some of the early GMT had clasp issues... Is the blue spring in both of them?

Thank you!

Wouldn't pay more.No difference at all. You have two BNIB watches to choose from.

Enjoy.

Both watches are exactly the same and both random and G serial are running at the same time. And yes both watches have the in-house made hairspring but no big deal either way.As any watch no matter the fancy name you call the hairspring is only as good as what its been regulated too,and no I would not pay any more for any serial whether random or G. Now in around 5-7 years there will be far more random serials around than any single letter serial since the single letters started in 1987.And only reason today they have started the so called random is simply down to Rolex having made so many watches over the last 36 years they have run out of letters and numbers.

No need to spend extra for random over G....the only reason random is more than G is because of the annual Rolex price increase....watches are identical.

I wouldn't pay more considering there is no difference between the two watches.

They're exactly the same watch but I'd get the random serial. Why? If I sell it in the future, it'll be identical to newer watches without the silly stigma of being "older".

I wonder what will actually happen down the road. The fact is that G and random serials are both still currently in production today as far as we can tell, so the G is not necessarily older than the random.

Assuming Rolex stays with the randoms going forward, it seems to me the serial number itself will mean nothing in terms of how old the watch is. Down the road you could have a 20 year old Rolex and a 2 year old Rolex both with randoms, and if they both have just come back from service looking brand new the only thing that will tell them apart will be the papers.

The papers will become that much more important than the serial number in determining how old the watch really is. I asked a jeweler about this - how they will value trade ins in the future with random serial numbers. He said that if the watch doesn't have papers they will simply have to low ball the trade in. Of course, with the minor changes Rolex makes to their models every few years (font color, no lugs holes, etc.) I suppose you could put a watch in a date range that way too.
