Rolex Explorer I not looking like a "Rolex?
How is that an advantage??? We buy Rolexes because we want people to see we wear them and be noticed (besides the great quality of course). But let's face it, if it's quality only, you could have bought Omega or Breitling for half the price as an example. We buy Rolex because it is a.....ROLEX!
So why would some people like the idea that the explorer I doesn't look like a Rolex? I want it to look like one! |

For me, the Explorer 1 epitomizes the iconic Rolex. It has the oyster bracelet and the Rolex name on the dial but most important...lots of history to it.

I would buy a rolex for many reasons. one reason would be it's a rolex it has history and experience they have credit for being worn by celebrities and iconic people. I honestly do not like walking around having a watch on my wrist shouting "Im a rolex" because that will lure attention and which sometimes is bad. Yes you can buy a omega for a much cheaper price but in my opinion rolex just has something to it that makes it special im not sure if it is the design, bracelet or movement but rolex is just one of a kind for me.Sometimes a simple watch is the best. Just my cents.

I think the Explorer looks very much like a Rolex. it doesn't look like a Submariner or a DateJust for example but it definitely looks like a Rolex. I think it's great

It depends how you define a "Rolex-like-looking" watch.
The Oyster's roots are pre-sports-models so, I'd say that it looks more "Rolex-like" than the sportsmodels. |

Epic, right?
I intentionally buy Rolexes that do not look like stereotypical Rolexes. Outside of my Submariner which was a gift (which I love don't get me wrong) I wanted to have a collection that was varied within the Rolex line. The Explorer absolutely looks like a Rolex: oyster case and bracelet, Mercedes hands, dial markers (with the exception of the 3-6-9 which is a tad different). The only thing that's non-Rolex about it is the lack of a cyclops and maybe, maybe the presence of a smooth bezel. |

I like Rolex for the quality AND the history. I wear one because I like 'em. I also wear Omega for the same reason. Getting noticed is a liability and it's bad form

Sorry...
There are MANY Rolex lovers that do not want to be "noticed", and buy solely because of their appreciation of the brand and what it offers. I won't go on too much but you can probably expect a storm for sure.... You are surely entitled to your opinion but this is an uneducated one at that. |

If you want to be noticed get the crown tattooed on your forehead..... There may be some copyright issues however !……. And please go and buy another brand of watch……

I don't see the need for any type of storm. It's a legit question, based on stuff others here say.
I also don't understand why some people don't want their watches to be noticed and yet they wear great looking rolex?? I honestly earned mine and I will not hide it for anyone. |

I don't know of any other brands that make the Explorer, so when I see an Explorer it certainly looks like a Rolex to me!

Eh?
The Explorer is an iconic Rolex, many have copied the look of the Explorer but only one is a Rolex. Not sure why I am even posting, I must be as daft as the op :) |

I think it's a legitimate question if distilled to the basics: why buy a Rolex if you don't want it to look like a Rolex?
In my own case, I like simple, black-dialed watches. I always admired Rolex but, when younger, tended to feel that they were "too old" for me. I also felt that a Rolex was likely to be considered "a bit obvious" for someone choosing a good watch. Rolex is, after all, pretty well known the world over as makers of fine watches! So, the Explorer appealed to me on both those levels: simplicity, and not quite so obvious by virtue of not screaming Rolex. I guess it's not that I don't want my watch not to look like a Rolex; it's more that I prefer for it to be defined as a nice watch first, which happens to be a Rolex second. Everyone buys for different reasons, has a different story and outlook on life, and that's what makes it all such fun!

Even in my home country I don't care for attention to my watch. I bought it because I like it and not to flash it around. Not everyone buys Rolex for reasons you describe. |

The last reason for me to buy and wear a Rolex is to get noticed.
If fact I would rather no one notice. |

When you buy a Ferrari, will you always hide it forever in your garage? .... It's the same situation with your Rolex, you don't have to either hide it or show it off, just wear it. Why cares of people look at it or not.
# it's just my 2 cents. |

IMHO the Expl.I looks like an updated original Rolex. Like the one from the '50s but bigger.
As for "what a Rolex looks like", the answer varies in the eye of the beholder. To a business person, perhaps that is a DJ in TT on a Jubilee. To a sportsman, maybe a classic SS Sub or Daytona or Explorer I or II. And to a pilot or world traveler, a GMT. The elite may expect a Rolex to be a diamond dialed Day Date. Either way, each model epitomizes the crown for every achievement in the eyes of people worldwide.

I don't. I buy them for the good looks and quality. If I was interested in being noticed, I'd probably buy a 55mm gold plated Invicta and be done with it.

Personally, i don´t feel comfortable when the average-joe notices my watch. That´s because the direction of the interest always turn to the money spent.
If a WIS recognizes then it´s all good. I have no problem talking to a fellow watch entusiast. I didn´t buy my Rolex to flash it to everybody but i´m not ashamed of it either.

Different stroke for different folks. Some like it that way some don't. There is no right or wrong, just wear what you like best

Now that is a classy answer. I honestly have to admit, that the shotgun indignation and denial comes from people that very much feel the need to be "showing" a Rolex but are just too insecure to even admit it to themselves. This, of course, is just my opinion. Personally, I have tried many other brands. I always come back to Rolex. And I admit, I very much enjoy the look of Rolex. AND, I am 100% certain that other people notice them. I am OK with it. And I love the Explorer I and feel like it very much looks like a Rolex. The Oyster Bracelet is pretty much unmistakable.

I buy Rolex because of the quality, history, tradition and innovation. I do not care if anyone notices what I wear, never have and never will. The only person I need to impress is me and that is tough enough.

I have both the 39mm Explorer and the Sub-C Date.
I would never give up the Explorer. I know what it is, I know what it's about and I know what it will forever be. That is why I bought the 39mm Explorer as my 1st Rolex. I don't care if I get noticed when I'm wearing them or not. As a matter of fact only a very few people know I have my Rolex watches, besides TRF, and they themselves either have one themselves or are interested in getting one. Nothing more frustrating when someone only see's the negative side of someone else's passion, interest or hobbies. After I bought my Sub I was chatting with my co-worker (Rolex owner) about my new purchase and another overheard and saw my Sub and said... "Is that a fake?" I replied.. "I see you drive a BMW... is that a fake?" and walked away.
