$210.00 Submariner

Ahhh, those must have been the days! If we only knew then what we know now. Can you imagine being on an actual Submarine wearing a 1960's era Sub? Think you're compulsive about minor scratches these days, I bet a Sub operating in an environment like that would have more than it's fair share of scratches and dings!
I got this original ad on the bay and plan to have it framed some day, that's my 14060M laying on the ad.

I wonder why the ad agency rotated the bezel? From the angle of the lens, it doesn't look like it's pointed exactly at the 8 minute marker. Perpective skew, or QC issue?

I wonder what $200 worth of blue chip stocks is valued at, 50 years later, as compared to the Rolex?

I suspect that the the agency wanted to give the impression that the bezel was actually in use for something, if it was intentional.

The bezel should have 120 clicks, which would be two per minute.

It's crazy how the price has ballooned.

$1500 to $2000 feels reasonable to me. $7000+ is a tough pill to swallow.

I agree. Sadly they've taken this route and they can keep their Subs at that price. Even used prices are grim. Oh well

Perhaps it was rotated for esthetics. The delta's base is "squared" in the photograph, so it appears as an upright pyramid.

There is nothing about the new rolexes that are "tool watches." They are luxury items - just look inside a store that sells them. The new tool watch is a Casio g shock... Look at the wrist of most soldiers, police etc...

You could get 57 of them instead of one DSSD (at retail).

I guess if you think about it, people probably asked for discounts back then too.

At 10% off Sub would only $189!!!!
The cost of 1 or 2 links now

Agreed. Rolex has complete priced itself way out of my price range, especially since AD discounts are low for sports models.

Well, the Dow was around $730.00 in 1962, and it's $14,516.00 right now. So I guess, naively, if you put $200 into the index it would be worth roughly $3800 today. I think $4,000 would be a nice price for a modern Sub.

I agree. $4,000 isn't too bad, and even $5,000 seems reasonable. $8,500? Man, that's just so much money for a "tool watch"!

Unfortunately, too many sellers are charging $5K plus for gently used, early 2000 sports models. Still out of my range. For that price, I can get two good OMEGAs (which I have).

Will likely still go for a 5513 or 16750 soon <--- notice that these two have remained stable at around $4-5K over the past 5 years.

Sub that old would have a friction type non clicking bezel, no?

It appears that this classic model looks more like the fat-lugged 116610, than the 16610.

Based on what I made back then, and what I made 40+ years later - the old Sub cost me more "manhours of salary" than the new ones.

So in context of earning power vs. inflation, or the value of the Dow, the new Subs are still good value IMHO.

I would hope that taken inflation into account, you make more money than you did as a 20-something kid

Brings back memories for me. I graduated high school in 1968. My parents offered to buy me a good watch for my graduation. My choice was between a Sub and a Bulova Accutron Spaceview. I chose the Spaceview. I'm not sure it mattered much though. While in the Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, one night it Fayetteville (I think we called it Fatalburg at the time), myself and a couple of buddies were robbed at gunpoint and my watch was gone. If it wasn't the Spaceview, it would of been the Sub.
