Remarks of owning a GMT2 16710

Some of you know that the GMT2 16710 has been on my mind for quiet some time and finally I purchased a mint D serial example from TimeToGo who was nothing but a class act to deal with.

The Watch arrived and the more I wear it the more I appreciate it simplicity. My first venture into the Rolex ownership experience started with a Daytona 116520 in 2011. I was a watch fanatic since the beginning and my first proper watch was a Zenith Defy Classic Two Tone RG which I sold later for an Audemars Piguet ROO. As you grow older you have a change in taste be it clothes, music, cars or watches and thats the case with me. If you asked me a couple of years back which car would you want to buy it would be a Ferrari 458 but now I think if I had to have another car it would be a Porsche 928 or 993 Turbo.

After owning a Zenith, AP and Panerai it is safe to say that sometimes a watch maker that is conservative like Rolex will appear to me more than the "haute" watches. I am more than thankful for owning 2 Rolex's and a Breguet and it sort of is a conservative lineup that I have compared to what I have enjoyed before which are more of a fashion statement than true keeper watches that will look as good as they are today in 20 years time.

I guess its easy to conclude saying like Porsche, Rolex looks better as it gets older and has sentimental value to you. I have a modern Classic and that is a Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6; I consider my Rolex GMT2 16710 is its watch equivalent.

The watch arrived before the Basel announcement of the Black Blue GMT2 in 2 days time and I am more than pleased with the non ceramic GMT2 because it looks much more proportional and very beautiful for a 8 year old watch "D serial".

I have worn the watch for the past 4-5 days and I received numerous compliments from friends and family thinking its a brand new watch, some people do actually want one and I told them thats its discontinued which was a pity to see their faces disappointed.

Here is a pic of my GMT2 16710 Stick Dial.

I've been enjoying the same watch for 17 years. It never gets old.

Also, my 1997. 993 is a keeper too. 160k miles and still going strong.

Thanks for sharing.

I love my 16710. Congrats on an awesome watch. Norman is a great guy. I've bought a couple watches from him.

16710 Coke was my first Rolex.

I can't say it's my favourite, Sea Dweller 16600 probably takes that honour, but for simplicity as you say the GMT2 is a winner..

Enjoy.....

Excellent choice, congrats! Wearing my 16710 now to navigate Switzerland (and Baselworld). Like you, I prefer the classic GMT to the newer style.
Enjoy that iconic beauty in the best of health!

Nice stick dial, sans serif insert. Nice combination.

If I had my way, Rolex would make 2 watches: the Explorer and GMT. Anything else is superfluous.

Wear it in good health. I have been enjoying mine for over 15 years and it's predecessors (which I foolishly sold/traded*%!@^%#$@!*()!!^@) for over 25 years! Long live the 16710.

Thanks to all who enjoyed my short narrative, its easy to say if I liked it 8 years ago it would easy to bet that I would like it as much in 20 years time (same applies to my 911).

I think you made a great choice and if I can find a decent example when the time comes for my next purchase I am likely go to with a 16710.

Yes also nice but I like the Coke bezel more because it's more low key. The Blue just pops.

Actually a friend of mine was so interested in getting a GMT2 after he saw my watch and purchased one of a member here which is on its way to him. T Serial GMT2 16710 pepsi.

The 16710 was my first Rolex and I regretted selling it for years and years. But thanks to DavidSW here on the forum, I now enjoy a Z serial Pepsi that gets more wrist time than the rest.
It is a true iconic classic; enjoy yours!

A real beauty you have there. I like the modern references, but that's really very sharp. For a long, long time I've dreamt of a red/black GMTII on jubilee.

Excellent choise. My 16710 is a P 353XXX, and keeps company to the rest of my watches, 16700, 5513, etc. Enjoy
