I have been looking around the forum for awhile but I am finally getting around to posting.

Let me start off by stating I am 24 and recently got my first full time job as a Control Systems Engineer in Houston and within the next few months I will be in the market for my first Rolex. I have a few questions and I am also looking for any advice current Rolex owners are willing to share.

What I am looking for is a 16610 with an R serial. I am looking for the 1987/1988 model as I would love for my first watch to share my age. I like the utility of the 16610 especially with the pictures on the board of ones with NATO bands and would also like to be able to have that option when wearing one.

My first boss, a gentleman who I worked for during my summers in highschool, worked on the farm with a 16803 always on his wrist which sparked my love affair with Submariners and it has been my goal to own one ever since.

I am a novice when it comes to purchasing a pre-owned watch and was wonderng what I should be on the look for as far as price, condition, etc. Anything you can share to better help me understand what I need to look for and what I should ask for such a watch is greatly appreciated.

Hal Martin's on Westheimer has a good selection of different generations of subs. I was surprised how much the bracelet and clasps differed between old and new.

Congrats on landing your first job. As for advice, spend a good deal of time cruising through the many listings here in the TRF classifieds to be sure you know what you want.

Next, only deal with a trusted seller with impeccable references over several years/transactions. You can also look at the TRF seller's reputations on Who's Who.

The thing you can't replace is trust - buy the seller first, then the watch!

Youre a young guy so maybe the more modern new ceramic Subc will appeal to you more. If so worth saving a bit longer to get one.

I plan on buying a 116613 in the future as a dress watch but wouldnt mind an older one right now. The appeal, especially with one roughly the same age as me, is knowing it has been around for awhile and has some stories to tell as I can relate to that.

And my apologies if my above post violates any rules asking about prices. I can't seem to figure out how to modify that post.

The Sub is a great choice. I had my first at 22.

The price is hard to determine as there are so many variables. Search around TRF and timezone.com. Always buy the seller, always ask for references and as much info as you can get.

You will be spending quite a bit of money as these watches are increasing in value in this market. Try to do as much research as you can right here on TRF before buying anything. Please ask as many questions as you want because we all want to make sure you get what you pay for.

Second: Great election , you have good taste.Go to a specialist to find your watch and go out from the bargains.

Yep, Im also from Spain... the man is quite right in what he says! Hold on to that job and go for that Rollie! Sub is always a good first buy

Take your time, do a ton of research - read, read and read some more. I would recommend buying from a trusted seller here on TRF, as mentioned before go to the Who's Who section when you get serious about purchasing, buy the seller first then the watch!

I was debating between purchasing a 16610 or 116610 for quite some time - for me, I didn't want to settle and decided on the 116610, absolutely love it!
