Shipping from EU to USA

Does anyone have experience shipping a Rolex from the EU? How much hassle is involved? What are import duties? Any experience share would be appreciated. I would be shipping to Detroit mi.

The problem lies in that US copyright law prohibits and Rolex US enforces it. So if marked Rolex customs will confiscate watch and you will get a nasty letter from Rolex US attorneys. This has happened to me and fortunately they allowed watch to go back to seller and I got my money back.

I bought a new old stock (NOS) Oyster bracelet for a 1969 Air-King from a private seller who bought for himself but never used, the Rolex packaging was still sealed. It was shipped to me from the UK with no problems. Don't know what might have happened if it were an entire watch. I can understand if a new watch were sold and taxes weren't paid, but if buying used then the country in which the watch was originally sold should have already collected it's fair share of taxes. I've never understood or agreed with governments continuing to collect duty and taxes when used merchandise are resold over time.

I wouldn't take the risk. If the watch is special enough: go get it yourself.

If you really want to read why Rolex US has right to confiscate any Rolex new or used entering the US here you go. There have been numerous threads on this in past and regardless if one agrees with it or not it is what it is. Here you go:

Thanks for the info, everyone and especially the extremely generous offer by Marc to hand carry the watch. Unfortunately, in the few hours of deliberation, the watch was sold to someone else. The quest continues!!
