One watch owners - Submariner to DJII?
I currently have a Submariner Hulk as my daily watch. I love the hulk but I realized I want something a little more dressy yet still sporty and versatile.
I'm thinking a white stick dial DJ II w/ WG bezel will suit my needs. Although I am not 100% sold on having PCLs. Anyway, for 1 watch owners, has anyone ever went from owning the submariner to a DJ II as their only watch? Any regrets? Should I snap out of it and hang on to my hulk? I'm not interested in the regular black sub since they are too common / regular in my opinion, which is why I opted for the LV. I'm also considering an Omega 41.5 Aqua Terra since it has an all brushed bracelet but I'm thinking I want to stick with the Rolex pedigree. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Also, how do you think I would fair at trying to do the flip at an AD? What about with a trusted seller on the forum? |

I don't know if I could wear a green watch everyday, the DJ2 that you are describing is mighty nice!!

Explorer 2 42mm. Most versatile IMHO

I think the SubC LN is the most versatile watch in the Rolex line. Have you considered going black instead?

The EXP II while a great watch doesn't sing to me, I think it's too sporty for what I'm looking for.
I really haven't considered the LN because I want something a little different than what I'm use to. Plus my dad owns both a 116613 LN & LB that I can use occasionally to get my Sub fix. |

Were I to have only one Rolex, I would have a DJ or DJ2.

I wear my Hulk daily and see no problem with green... In the past was my daily driver LNc. Maybe was more universal, but I don't care and never see back.

Have to agree that if you want something chunky, sporty and elegant as a daily wear, and if youve got the wrist size to bear it, the DJII (without yellow gold) is no doubt your best choice! Go for it!

The most versatile watch must be the Explorer 1 39mm.
Can be worn with tux or sports gear! |

The DJ2 sounds like a good option for what you are looking for. Dresses things up a bit more, yet still sporty.
With flipping, rarely will you get a god deal with an AD. I'd sell privately and have cash in hand for your purchase or contact a trusted seller here. Good luck. |

I could definitely see wanting something more versatile than the LV. But if you really like it, consider simply adding a nice, used DJ I or Exp I from a TRF seller, for times when you want something a bit dressier. That might not cost too much more than trading-in at an AD for a new DJ II, and you would have two great watches.

I just traded my subc no date for a datejust II and I am a one watch guy. I was having the same feelings you are. I also did not like the pcl's so I brushed them (there is a thread here with pics) but if you are to get the wg fluted bezel I would not brush the pcl's as I think it only works with the smooth bezel. If your heart is not set on the fluted bezel try on the same watch with the smooth bezel, the white dial was my second choice but I went with the blue stick. I am very happy with my flip.
As far as doing the trade with your ad I tried that as well. My sub was mint and about one year old. They offered me peanuts for it. I contacted davidsw and he offered me a great deal on the trade and two days later I had a bnib datejust II. I would suggest dropping him a line. Good luck!!! |

I say buy the DJII and brush out the PCL's. It can always be polished again.

I'm in the boat with Peter, have you considered the Explorer I? I think that would be a perfect comprimise for you, unless you have to have the date function.

I have both the Hulk and the black sub c for that reason. I don't feel the hulk is right with all dress and occasions. In that case, I just pull out my black Sub C. But, if you can't keep the Hulk, the DJ 2 with the blue dial is a great choice.

Depends what AD you go to. I doubt you'll get a fair price, remember they have to make a profit and pay their bills. I was a one watch owner with a DJII for about 1.5 years and then wanted something a little more sporty and picked up the ExpII. I think I have the perfect combo now. I wouldn't let your sub go, but save up for a DJII. Then you'll have a dynamic combo that will cover all occasions. If you flip your sub for the DJII, I think in about 6 months you'll be wishing you had another sports watch with a brushed bracelet.

I'd say, in the Rolex lineup, that the DJ2, Explorer, or the GMT Master II are the most versatile. If I were going to go DJ2 I'd go with a stick or Arabic numeral dial as the Romans are a little more dressy. Also I'd stick a smooth bezel. The fluted is beautiful but again, a tad too dressy for versatility. The Explorer only comes one way so that's easy. It's got the dressy skeleton with the sporty hands and a simple, clean dial. Cannot go wrong. Just make sure you do not need a date. The GMT Master II has a sporty look but has the PCLs which make it a nice hybrid watch.
The Subs and Explorer IIs just have too much sport in their DNA and the subtle differences add up. I am in the 2-3 watch camp. If you have the money, a DJ2 would go perfect with a Sub. If you have the opportunity to have a rotatable or marked bezeled watch with the Mercedes hands and the smooth bezeled watch with straight stick hands you're probably getting the best of both worlds Rolex has to offer. |

Unless you are a diver or a very sporty/action guy, there are better one-watch options than the Submariner. It is a true classic for many of us and perhaps the first Rolex we coveted as young men, but if you are of a certain age, you are a business man and spend more time in meetings and dinners vs diving, I think a DJ or Explorer are great, perhaps even more suitable, one-watch solutions.
I wouldn't hesitate to change. |

I have a SubC LV as my only watch which I wear for everything. I really think it looks good whether you wear a suit or dinner jacket as well as jeans and t-shirt.
My Brother has the Exp 1 39mm as his only watch and I personally think it is a better choice than the DJ if you have to sell your Sub. |

I would say 116610LN. I wouldn't worry about it being too common, as it is a very vercitial watch. DJII are nice as well and I plan on picking one up with the same configuration as you are looking at, only with a black dial. I do tend to see DJII around here and there too.
