Bezel Insert Fade

I see many Gmt's that have beautiful weathered fade,my eye doctor has one he bought 40 years ago in geneva thats just stunning,by the way he paid $150.00 back then.I wonder why the LV subs some of which are 10 years old or so and i would guess have been in the sun and salt water dont seem to have any fade.

Well in my experience its mainly the coloured red blue inserts that might fade after years in strong sunshine the most. Now I worked as a dive guide for many years, and one of my SDs spent well over 600 hours underwater both fresh and salt. And the countries then mainly middle and far east and all my watches were exposed to very strong sunshine daily for years. And yet none of my inserts showed any signs of fading but these were black.

The colours that fade, are the ones close to the sides of the visual spectrum.

These are mainly the blue ( violet ) and red.

To protect this happening, UV filters are used.

Yes, also red and blue cars ( even German ones ) do fade. If you look around in areas were the sun is very strong, you willl notice them.

There are norms that prescribe the % content of the UV protector in the paint or the material, according to the expected exposure to southern countries, and the type of material, e.g. metal, plastic, wood, etc.

The effect of the sun ( UV-A and UV-B ) is that "ages" the color, and accelarates the result that would occur anyway in 25, 50 or 100 years.

In the lab, you test the resistance / result of the UV protector, by simulating the effect of direct sun light, so you predict what the subject will look after a period of time.

This way you conclude on the % required as to protect the appearence for the expected service life.
