Can't Believe It....But It May Be Hulk Time!! Or DSSD???
Lately, I've been thinking about adding a modern Sub-C to my current Rolex collection. I already have:
- GMTII-C - SS Daytona - 16610LV Naturally, I assumed it was going to be an LN so I headed off to my local AD to check one out - even though I had seen one multiple times before. In fact, I had checked out the Sub-C on at least 3 different occassions but ended up with one of my above watches every time. I just couldnt deal with the squarish lugs. Fast foward though, and I was willing to be a little more open-minded about the maxi-case - probably, because rather than it being an 'either/or' proposition I already had some of the more classic aesthetics covered in my Daytona and 16610LV. Anyway, I walk into the AD and just, for some reason, had them take the Hulk out of the case for me to check out...I honestly can't remember if I ever actually handled one before but this time it looked quite attractive to me. Again, maybe its because I already have more conservative/conventional Rollies and now I feel a little more empowered to get a watch for the watch's sake (ie as opposed to thinking about circumstances where I couldnt wear it or how practical it would be under cuff, i feel like I can just enjoy it for what it is). The Hulk dial is incredible...the bezel coloring makes me a bit hesitant, as at certain angles (much like the Smurf), it took on an almost cartoonish hue to me. At any rate, although I am less concerned with the overall practicality of my next watch - or, that is to say, its not the overriding factor like maybe it was with my first or even second Rolex - I do still worry a bit that maybe the novelty of the green may wear thin for me over time. I'd like to hear from both current owners that still love the Hulk or, maybe even more importantly, former owners who were in love for some time but ultimately moved on. I must admit, the DSSD also attracted my attention this time - its such a huge block of metal, though ....but if i take my theory above (ie screw practicality just get the next watch to enjoy it) to the n(th) degree, the DSSD has a ton going for it too. I love the matte dial, the 'depth' of the dial (outer bezel, inner bezel, hands, dial), and the 'tool' aspect of it. My wrist is somewhat small and I am not a big guy at all, so the watch certainly wears big! One of the things that got me thinking about a newer Sub was an imminent diving trip to the Carribean. Though, obviously, I know one doesnt need a Sub or DSSD for this, the romanticsm of it is appealing - if nothing else, its a great excuse, right? I cant help thinking how fitting the DSSD would be for my first scuba adventure So, sorry for the rambling - but any thoughts on the Hulk or DSSD in terms of longer term appeal and if maybe the 4th rolex is the time for such extravagance? thanks guys!! |

My vote goes to the sub-c or hulk. I am a fan of bigger watches, but just not wild over the thickness of the dssd. Also thought the proportions of case to band width looked off the few times I tried it on. ... The hulk is super cool if you fall in love with the green dial.. All 3 are awesome watches, no wrong choice just personal preference

You're over thinking a choice of want, not need.....
Go for the one you like the most! In the end, it makes for the best decision! (Either would be a great choice IMO)

If it were my decision, I'd go for the DSSD. It is a more interesting piece to me, vs the commemorative aesthetics of the Sub-C hulk.

either one is a good choice but the dssd slots in better imo since you have a pre-c lv already.

Why did you initially buy the GMT over the SubC if you didn't like the Maxi case? They're identical.

I agree with Rob on this one. I was thinking of getting a DJ as it seemed more practical. I went with the LVc since it sang to me. No regrets - and I can dress it up or down.

The DSSD has never appealed to me, not just because of the size but mainly the domed crystal. It looks strange and because of the shape, it captures reflections too much. I much prefer a flat crystal. Go for the SubC, I did and have not regretted it.

I had both lvc and ln sub at a same time back then, the lvc was nice and really attractive, but in the end the classic black color of the ln sub wins it for me. It is how a submariner look like since the beginning.
I dont have the ln anymore and missing a sub very much, but luckily have the dssd and in my opinion from experience owning them all. Between hulk and dssd, i would go for dssd all the way. The novelty of lvc color wears out after a while for me, while black is forever. Dssd is an over engineered sub, and it is really awesome, just not as versatile, thats all. Also i notice you already have the gmt2c, imho it looks very similar to the sub from a distance. Have you also considered the new 42mm explorers? |

I also agree about the colour, but I like neutral colours on watches, no blues or greens for me. I always get black (or other neutral colours).

Just get a new Explorer II, platinum bezel, blue dial, and be done with it!

Make a couple more AD visits if necessary.
The LVC is such a cool Sub in my opinion. If the green ever becomes too much for you, just take a break from it for a while and next time you put it on you'll love it all over again. I speak from experience. |

I own 2 Ceramic Subs..LN and LV. If I absolutely had to make a decision between the two I would keep the Hulk. You will simply fall deeper in love with it and how truly beautiful it is on a daily basis. Additionally, since the dial goes black under most lighting and angles, it is far more versatile than you realize!

Yes, right you are. At the AD looking at Subs, he started throwing all these beautiful watches at me. In all the excitement, I lost track, did I fire five shots or six?

In opinion if its an either or situation get the hulk , it's a more comfortable wear And fits almost any situation , although at times it does not go well with all colors or combination . DSSD is totally amazing too but I wouldn't keep it over the green sub. I recently sold the DSSD and it sort of boomeranged back to me again . Even though I wear it much less need it haha

I dont think the green would get boring at all. It is probably its best feature and the thing to keep it, the colour at all angles is just great. Makes it that bit more interesting and forgiving over them squareish lugs.

thanks so much for the thoughts guys!!!
i guess these happen to be two models that are sort of forum-cult classics :) on thing about the Hulk I would be interested in getting thoughts on - though it is, obviously fantastic looking, do you guys feel that it is a bit less of a tool watch vibe to it - almost, like its too attractive? i think thats one thing that is attractive about the DSSD to me - it sort of has a pure professional/tool look, while the Hulk clearly is functionally capable of doing whatever i would do and more, its look is less utilitarian to me and more dressy or refined, solely because of the color to me - anyone else feel this way or differently/ i know we are talking rolex here and if pure function is the objective a Casio will fit the bill - i just mean tool and DNA within the rolex history/universe. |
