1/2 link is used to attach to the clasp adjustment. Mine is actually not visible because it is attached to the 4th hole.

As many as are needed to fit your wrist.
 Links aren't particularly expensive...and unless you need ALL of them, I'd not worry to much if you have ALL of them.
