Wow, the new GMT, will it be a SS Daytona phenom?

Was at my AD yesterday, and asked about the new (black and blue) GMT and the sales people went absolutely giddy. They fell all over themselves talking about how nice it looked and how beautiful it was... I don't think I've ever seen AD salesmen (and women) so excited about a new model. Here is the part that really caught my attention:

THEY HAVE A WAITING LIST.

They had gotten "a couple" in, and they went to the "good" customers the same day. They don't expect a shipment soon, but there are already several people waiting for them, and again, the "good" customers would have first chance to purchase. They candidly told me that it would be a while... a LONG while in their opinion before any average person could walk in off the street and pick one out of the case.

This sounded to me a LOT like the SS Daytona craze of 2007-2008. Do you think we are headed for the same kind of hype?

It's hard to imagine they would be in such short supply with simply a bezel change. Artificial demand?

I don't think the Daytona hype will repeat itself any time soon, and especially not with the blue/black GMT2-c.

I don't think the new GMT will reach Daytona levels, but most of the sales people will play the Daytona (only for best customers, in the safe) card as long as they don't have many in stock and people ask for them.

Remember that you are talking with people that coined term 'limited edition' for Sub LV and Milgauss GV. They will not hesitate to use the same tactic for any new hot watch.

Like everyone says its just a bezel change, they have been pumping out this model for years now. It is beautiful however and i will own one when the time is right.

Nothing more than AD flannel, usually the same with a new SS sports model, give it a few months & the dust will settle

Ahhhh... the magic of the Rolex marketing machine. Gotta hand it to 'em... few brands in the world do this as effectively.

On a related note I stopped into a local AD yesterday to check-out & try on the Explorer II for size. It is a bit too big on me but a great watch for sure.

I had my GMT IIC on and they were equally as giddy about the new version. They expect them in later this month - looking forward to seeing one in person.

I asked about pricing in general and they "claim" zero discounting anymore on Rolex. The best she could offer on an Explorer II was to cover tax. In Michigan that is 6% so about $500 on a $8,150 watch. I am sure that is the standard AD line these days.

Wasn't planning to buy but always like to ask.

I don't think it will be. I've seen them in windows in different cities around the UK. The steel daytona I never saw in a window until last year

Well, it's the first new rolex that I'm excited by in quite a long time...so there is some legitimate hype there...but not of Daytona levels.
