Do you think the Explorer I is too small?

Do you think the current Explorer I at 39mm is too small given that most men's watches are 40mm and over?

I have the old Exp II and love the size and wanted something to compliment it but found that on my 7 inch wrist, the Exp I just looked small by today's standards.

I would probably buy an Exp I if they made it larger.

39 mm is perfectly fine.

Interesting article indeed!

But since I've been wearing my Exp II, Breitling SO 42mm and Omega AT 41.5mm, I can no longer go back to my 36mm Breitling Colt or Tag. So my wife has inherited them and loves the size.

I believe that for my wrist, 42mm is a maximum size I would wear.

i think it really depends on how big your wrist is. if you have a 9 inch plus flat and wide wrist, then yes it might be a tad small.

i think on most people with wrist size between 6.5 - 7.5 you should be fine.

You'll find the gigantic watch trend is pulling back a bit. The obsession with watch size really has run it's course around here.

Wear what you like, not what everyone else says you should like

Just my 2 cents again, but I think the new EXP II at 42mm looks too big whereas my Exp II at 40mm looks proportionately more balanced.

I don't even think that the 36mm Explorers are too small. 39mm ones looks nice and big to me.

Personally, I don't even believe in the correlation of wrist size and watch size. You size the bracelet to fit your wrist. The watch size should be whatever you want.

Just wanted to have some fun and show some size differences.

From left to right:
- my first watch circa 1972 - A Swiss made Mickey Mouse watch I received for my 5th birthday
- my great grandfather's gold Wittnauer circa 1949
- my Exp I at 40mm
- my Omega AT at 41.5mm

No. Watches have gotten too large/out of scale.

No, it is NOT too small.

And I think it's fine at 36mm too!

I disagree. I'm on vacation in Spain right now and it is hard to find anyone here in Barcelona under 40 who isn't wearing some 46mm + watch and It's not the just the Spaniards but everyone.

Personally, I think 39mm is perfect for an everyday, not too dressy to casual watch. Also bear in mind that while the case is 39mm, it wears a bit larger, due top the thin bezel. The dial is actually larger than the 40mm Sumbariners. I have tried a few on, want to get one myself.

6'1". 231lbs. I would wear a 36mm EXPI with no issue what so ever. But I do love my EXPII.

Oh I agree with you. Some of the watches I've seen are pushing good taste and fashion sense. Reminds me of some of my good folks back in Texas. He with the biggest tires on his truck wins.

Nope, great size and wrist presence.

Thanks for sharing! That was a great article. I've always been against big watches, thinking 42mm should be the maximum any watch should be, but the part where even the sub was a big watch back when it first came out, I guess now it makes sense for the size to evolve into what the sizes of other watches are now.

However, for me, 42mm is my limit because I prefer a classic look over modern. That being said, the explorer 1 is a great size. Even the 36mm exp 1 is a great size. I hope Rolex continues to make conservative size watches and preserve the classics even if they choose to venture forward into future trends.

I think 40mm would be my max, and 39mm would be fine.

Today's "standards" are tomorrow's folly. Classic always remains . . . classic.
