In love wth my GMT Master IIC but worried i'm putting too much wear on it

Got mine in mid Dec (first Rolex). First, let me say that it was love at first sight and that love has only grown.

I wear it constantly, and accordingly, the clasp already has wear and tear and there are two slight nicks on the polished links.

I am realizing that if i wear this every day, in a few years it's going to be fairly banged up. Is that just part of the charm?

Should i be considering buying a second, more "durable" watch?

As a side note, i'm becoming interested in getting a dressier, more conservative Rolex to wear under suits. I'd prefer the watch to be low key (no gold), I have smaller wrists, and I am 27 years old. Also, financially, I am not prepared to buy the platinum/white gold watches. What Rolex would you recommend?

A nice ss DateJust would compliment you GMT IIc very well. Use the GMT as your everday watch. Live with it, enjoy the memories, then have a 5 year service and it will look brand new. Remember: life is not a dress rehearsal.
Good luck,
dP

I can't wait to get mine back. It's currently at the local AD awaiting service.

What Dan says is true - life isn't a dress rehearsal and the signs of wear and tear that your GMT will inevitably pick up will IMHO only add to its charm and character. Enjoy it!!

Stan.

Wear your watch in good health, crown. It's tough and built to last and be worn. And I agree with DP, a nice DJ would be a perfect complement to your GMT. I'm considering one myself. Welcome to TRF.

Like what others said, the scratches can be polished and buffed out. Just wear your GMT daily and enjoy it.

Yeah mine's back at the AD too! The crown stopped popping out to the neutral position and needed to be "teased" with a few turns to 12 end to get ther (with a little pop). Wierd.

Wear it, that is what it for. When you get it back from service, you'll have a brand new Rolex AND the benefit of having worn it for 5 years. Watches are going to get scratched. If you can't wear one without freaking out then getting a second probably isn't a great idea.

Stainless steel is as durable as it gets. If you're doing something specific that puts wear on it, stop. If it's normal wear, just be sure that you send the watch away for an official service in five years, and they'll take all the scratches out of it.

Incidentally, I don't think you need a second rolex to wear under suits. I picked out the GMTc as a watch to wear with everything. While certain style purists still discourage it, it's absolutely accepted to wear a sports watch with business dress.

Where it EVERY DAY! Just get it tuned up cosmetically when you have the regular interval service performed on it.

DJF - don't get me wrong - i'm absolutely wearing this thing under suits and love every minute of it. I'm just hooked on Rolexes now and thought a little variety would be nice.

I like the Datejust a lot and will give it some thought over the coming months.... can't decide where i stand on the jubilee vs. oyster bracelet issue.

That's too bad. I'm waiting on getting my DJ back. although I love my new GMT, I miss the DJ that was on my wrist almost every day for the past 8 years or so.

I'd recommend you don't buy another yet but learn to enjoy the one you have. Like others say, when you get it back from Rolex it will look new every five years.

I too got my ss GMT IIc in late Nov. I wear it everyday. Please do not take this the wrong way, but I look at it like this, if I pay 5 to 6k on a watch, believe me I'm wearring it, dings scratches and all, that' what it's for. It's a watch. That's one of the main reasons I went with a Rolex, for it's durability. I don't think a watch is meant to be purchased and then set in a box and only taken out for an occasion, unless it is your "dress" watch and even then, I wouldn't leave it for a long period of time. I am a very casual guy, I wear jeans and t-shirts everyday, so I did not buy my watch to impress anyone. My center links look like it's been worn, alot, but that's ok with me, I am enoying it to the fullest. I'd say wear it and don't worry about it.

Just me opinion.

Kyle

Just wear it....life is too short to let your watches sit in stupid boxes, covered with stickers.

If you are afraid of wear and depreciation, get a Timex...otherwise enjoy your watch in good health !

If a Rolex cannot take general wear and then some....then it's not worth paying for one. Wear it. All this stuff about the "sticker" on the back and not having it sized, does it have a scratch, etc...., that is just too much. Use it or lose it.

I haven't subscribed to the theory that a DJ or DD are any more appropriate for suits. I wear my 45 year old Tudor Submariner with suits including during trials.

As they say - "use it or lose it". So use it, and know that when service time comes the RSC will return it looking like new.
